Dr. Jamming wrote:It seems quite plausible (if the parents knew about Amber's career) that they wouldn't have mentioned it simply out of a desire to be discreet, or to avoid awkwardness. It wouldn't be necessary for them to be conspiring to keep ruby in the dark, so much as their simply finding out incidentally, and then assuming that Amber would bring it up if she ever wanted to talk about it. For all they know, it could be safe to assume that there's nothing to tell Ruby at all, especially if it's something like the first Google result for Amber's name (Many pron-stars will show up under their real names even if they use a stage name when working). A sort of everyone knows, no one brings it up situation. But hen, I suppose interpersonal dynamics are different for everyone.
But then, they'd be knowingly sending their naïve, sheltered daughter to live with a porn star, without warning her (or Amber), and without considering how Ruby might feel about that even if she did already know. It is clear that they're frikkin' awful parents, but that would hit truly criminal levels of thoughtlessness.
Plus, according to Ruby's (biased) account, they talk about Amber, favourably, in her absence. Funny if they do that without mentioning what they know she does for a living.
Look, "Oh, we knew that all along" is a massive comedy cliché. I know that some people want their comedy totally clichéd and predictable, but in this case it could only be achieved by dumping a whole load of not-very-comedy crap on Ruby's head. I can't see how it could work.
Oh yeah, two stray possibilities:
(1) If Dillon drags Ruby out of the room for a moment, and determines that Ruby is jealous of Amber's grabbing Ray's attention (which he might put down to nothing deeper than Ruby understandably finding Ray attractive), what are the odds that he'll say "She's just saying hello" and lead Ruby back into the room -- only to discover Amber kissing Ray (strictly for teaching purposes, of course)?
(2) Ray's been a bit of a blank so far, but when he first appeared, he demonstrated a bit of sensitivity and sympathy about other people's feelings. Bonus points to him if he does get left alone with Amber, only to say "Your sister isn't jealous of you, is she?".
