Cute as today's strip is, though, I think that we've got the message by now; Ruby has an ordinary, healthy set of instincts, and the repression just isn't working any more. She's going to be running her brain round in ever-decreasing circles until she finally calls Andy up and tells him to come round and bring condoms (and, sure, if he mentions this to anyone else, ever, he's going to die). Heck, acquiring a battery-operated boyfriend might tide her over for now. But right now, she's messing up her own attempts to be a good person, and very possibly sabotaging her own job search. She's supposed to be smart; she should be able to work this out for herself.

I would anticipate Ruby feeling much shame after doing that, for giving in to "base impulses" and being "no better than her tramp of a sister." (Remember, she thinks of herself as "better" than Amber for not giving in to her lusts, at least to the extent of not having sex with anyone) And she might have a meltdown if she and Andy were actually "caught" by Amber and/or Dillon during or after the fact.

Anyway, like lordoffiling says, I think she's got a long way to go before she actually takes those final steps. Maybe if she got really drunk on day - but I'm betting she doesn't drink either.

Also, Ruby needs to look onto geting contafts. She looks really good wighout those glasses. Or maybe different frames?

I don't know, I find her sexier with glasses. None the less the girl is beautiful and having an attack of hormones. If left to her own devices she might welcome these thoughts and act on them.... in a few years.

For now she is letting her desires for boys short circuit her more practical concerns. I feel some of the strips coming up will focus on her learning self-control over these desires.

I never really thought about this but is it wrong for me to think of Ruby from RWBY when I hear the name Ruby?

Also, in a story I've been writing I have a character named Ruby...except she was previously known as Scarlet, then before that it was Rose, and I have made it clear that neither are her real name. She has very dark red hair, hence the redness of her names.

No, she was in denial before the comic started, not trying to work anything out; the leg-selfie seems to have been about as far as she went with her sexuality. The denial held up for years - presumably, there were no handsome men at all at her university - but it's basically in the middle of total collapse at this point, and she's in a completely unsustainable emotional state. Which is what she's now trying to work out.

She'd have a problem with the situation, but I think she could talk herself round to it eventually; it's just a bigger version of the yaoi, in that sense. She could tell herself that a modern woman is allowed to have sex if she wants to, and it's acceptable for stress relief. Yes, she desperately wants to be better than Amber, but she could decide that having sex in private, with one guy, who she first gets to know and who shows that he respects her, still leaves her morally far ahead of a porn star who screws men she's only just met.

And Andy does seem to be an obliging, respectful lad, who could doubtless be sworn to silence and who might even remember that promise.

But...

And she might have a meltdown if she and Andy were actually "caught" by Amber and/or Dillon during or after the fact.

Amber would be the big problem, I reckon. Ruby is coming to terms with Dillon, and there's not much to be done about him - and he seems to be slowly developing a little respect for her feelings. She might even slip and call him her friend in a little while. But she seems to be convinced that she needs a moral advantage over Amber, or that Amber would taunt her forever if she ever showed less than perfect respectability to her sister. If she won't even admit to the Rudy adventure, which she handled rather well and which actually involved her fooling Amber, admitting to sex would be right out.

(I'm half-waiting to see Amber saying something about knowing Ruby, and Ruby yelling "You didn't even know me when I was standing right in front of you in a stupid beard!"...)

So until they get their relationship much better sorted out, well, Andy had better have a room of his own or the price of a hotel room, or hope that Amber goes out of town for a few days.

Anyway, like lordoffiling says, I think she's got a long way to go before she actually takes those final steps.

In reality, I'd guess that this would be a matter of months, though Andy might at least find himself on a promise if he doesn't mind waiting while she comes to terms with the idea. In the comic, though, that might be longer than the entire duration of the story, so Ruby might throw herself into things a little more hastily.

On the other hand, and given that this is a comic -- Ruby is a passionate woman in her way, and the collapse of that repression might be quite catastrophic. It's just possible that Andy (or someone) will be dragged into a dark room and clumsily shagged senseless at some unexpected moment.

(Dillon's contribution to her decision process is going to be another factor. He's now worked out that she is currently stressed and repressed, and while he may say a few stupid and tactless things, he seems to be slowly coming to understand her well enough to maybe help more than he hinders.)

Probably not; she seemed to be on something soda-ish in a straight glass while Amber was on wine, the night she first arrived. But that'll be about preserving self-control, of course. The best way to get her to try a drink would be to tell her that she needed to learn a little bit about wine in order to look sophisticated. (So getting her drunk could be an expensive process.) Though we might just see her on a glass of champagne after she gets a job or Amber drags her to a movie launch party or something.

I can quite go for the round lenses. The owlish version of the hot librarian look works for me. Though she certainly looks great in panel 1 today.

(Mind you, I have a mild guilt complex about the girl I talked into getting contacts, who switched back to glasses after a few years and who still looks fine in them.)

That's the thing, and that's why I think she's going to have to sort her feelings out fairly quickly, at least to the extent of investing in mechanical relief. She prides herself on her intelligence; if she can't concentrate properly, she's got a problem that needs fixing now.

I feel some of the strips coming up will focus on her learning self-control over these desires.

But she's been doing the self-control thing for years, and now it's not working any more. She can strangle herself back and keep her legs crossed indefinitely, but the energy she's putting into that is now needed elsewhere.

While it would be beneficial for Ruby to find an outlet and accept that there is nothing wrong with some release I do not want her to turn into a female Gary. So far Ruby has many similarities, but the stark difference is she does not want to get involved with anyone for neither casual sex nor a relationship and I find it very refreshing. However, I would not mind if she stumbles into it much like Gary does as long as she is not actively seeking it.
