If you're going to get really technical, the rules of haiku have been really misrepresented in the forum contest (syllable counts, allowable content, phrasing, metaphor style and positioning, valid reasons to break rules, etc.). There's more styles of and rules to haiku then there are corrupt governing officials in UN member nations, and I really doubt very many people care to know them, let alone want to apply them to a forum contest. :-\
Further affiant sayeth not.

Because I said I would (and I haven't looked for my kiddy pics yet <.<) I'm going to pick on Don like I picked on Ith and Morwen. :D

You have an extra syllable in there, as I see it. I'm not singling you out, just as Ith and Morwen, I'm just annoying :D

Edit: Oh, and throw your other haiku in the Bard's Corner. ;;)

It's a big call, and largely I agree. Which is why I was a bit 'meh' about it. I kind of wish I knew them...haiku is a surprisingly therapeutic style.

Well I'm just keeping it to the general style rule of 5,7,5 since it makes it easy and simple and fun without having to conform to a bunch of little details you may not get.

Hey MS, does "here" count as 1 or 2 syllables?

To my knowledge, in all but a very small subset of English pronounciations, "here" is one syllable.

Mister Bishop, your haiku is not even near correct. 3-5-3 is not acceptable anywhere.

Close - line 1 and line 2 can follow, line 2 and line 3 can follow, but usually they're different thoughts.

To be more specific: Haiku: the division of 17 syllables into three groups of 5, 7, and 5 syllables. Works well when showing the poet's first impression, just as it was, of subjects taken from daily life, and of local colour to create freshness. Haiku-poems can describe almost anything, but you seldom find themes which are too complicated for normal PEOPLE's recognition and understanding. Some of the most thrilling Haiku-poems describe daily situations in a way that gives the reader a brand new experience of a well-known situation.

The technique of cutting divides the Haiku into two parts, with a certain imaginative distance between the two sections, but the two sections must remain, to a degree, independent of each other. Both sections must enrich the understanding of the other. To make this cutting in english, either the first or the second line ends often ends with a colon, long dash or ellipsis.

Nice examples:

Green frog,
Is your body also
freshly painted?

Temple bells die out.
The fragrant blossoms remain.
A perfect evening!

Granted...but I did sayt hat it was how I am used to doing them.

Debateable also, since Japanese characters/sylables have differing lengths and meanings based on use. One character, for instance, might mean blue or green.
