@Aren: I think the question of personality vs. physicality has a great deal to do with someone's inborn empathy. Note: I didn't say compassion. A lot of people hear "empathy" and think of "compassion", but the two are different. One can understand the feelings and ideals of another viscerally without approving of or believing in them. And while some people can learn observational techniques that grant them a functional empathy, some people have a natural gift, the kind of people that can look into someone's eyes and know they were abused as a child without any specific observations. (Yes, it's probable that they're subliminally performing those same observations, but the point being made is the same.)

Those types of people can't escape empathetic understanding of other people - they can't "turn off their eyes". Thus, they see as much of a person's personality as face (or, in some cases, more - I used to know someone who could tell you the entire life history of somebody on first observation, but couldn't remember their eye or hair color).
Further affiant sayeth not.

Hrm, I think I agree with this. I've noticed that I tend make friends with people who are 'broken' - people who are having emotional problems or issues with their life.

Of course, I also tend to appear to be very pro-government, pro-intellectual, pro-environment fascistic and socialistic Ice Bitch in real life, and it takes a bit to get to know me - unless you're one of the broken people that I just melt for.

It was a bit stream of consciousness... This guy I mentioned, Gaahl, he's the fronter of a very "evil" black metal band named Gorgoroth, and has done some pretty sick shit in his life (landed in prison for abducting and torturing someone, or so they say...). All in all, he was like the cliché overlord of what non-metallers would think a "true metaller" is like. And now we know he's gay and a vegetarian. Which kinda doesn't fit, you understand? This then lead to you not understanding the "evil" part, which led me to link to my "evil" picture... Also, midgetshrimp does not want to meet me in a dark alley. ;)

I assume (I'm not a fan)! But it gets better, he has now designed a line of women's clothing. ;)

I guess Torturers need some flowers too in their life. ;)
