Lyrics... and life!

Post by Don Alexander »

Hey there everyone and welcome to Lyrics and Life!

The idea for this topic has been spooking around in my head for a while. Some similar approaches have been made in other threads, e.g. IIRC steph once asked us once if we had any books that had deeply inspired us...

So, the topic now is snatches of lyrics or poems (or maybe pieces of prose) that have deeply touched you, that you relate to. Post them, tell us why you like them and were moved by them, share your stories!

I myself will start with three examples.

First, look down at my sig. Those lines by Dark Tranquillity have always touched me as a scientist. There's not a lot of lyrics that relate directly to science, which is usually rather dull and dry in terms of writing... I'm not even sure if these words apply to science in any way. But you sure can place them into the context. I am vastly impressed by humanities quest for knowledge, for the understanding of the world which surrounds us, and am very proud to play my tiny part in this quest. These two lines were the closing lines of my diploma thesis.

Then there's these lines from Dream Theater's "Blind Faith":

"Sorry you must excuse me
I've painted my own Mona Lisa
She's fixed everything
Now I'm spoiled beyond my wildest dreams"

Let's just say I want to be in a position to use them one day... I want to be spoiled beyond my wildest dreams... :((

And finally we have a single line from Dissection's "Black Horizons" which means more to me than anything else...

"I have seen the abyss and all that lies within"

Though the story behind it is extremely complicated, extremely long and extremely private... :|

The complete lyrics of the song, which are also very impressive, can be found here (well, no direct link possible due to JavaScript, just click on view lyrics, it's the first song).

Warning: No flowers and pink bears here, these are dark...

When I get around to it, I'll translate some pieces from the German band Nocte Obducta which had a "get out of my life" quality to them...

Looking forward to your picks!

Good thread idea, Don Alexander! Especially with my fondness for a variety of music, I approve. :D

While I should have turned in for sleep HOURS ago (darned insomnia), I'm going to have to mention two songs. Firstly, the song "Never Is a Promise" by Fiona Apple. My favorite song by her ever, and while the entire song is relevant to my life this passage in the beginning the most so.

You'll say you understand, but you don't understand
You'll say you'd never give up seeing eye to eye
But never is a promise, and you can't afford to lie

This one comes from an unlikely source... written by Paul Williams of all people, responsible for much of the material by the Carpenters! @-) It was recorded for the Brian DePalma movie Phantom of the Paradise, a cult classic. The name of the song is "Faust (One Love)".

I was not myself last night
Couldn't set things right
With apologies or flowers
Out of place as a cryin' clown
Who could only frown
And the play went on for hours
And as I lived my role
I swore I'd sell my soul
For one love...

It's a very interesting song, especially the version of the song done by William Finley used early in the film.

I think I mentioned in another thread here already how Jim Croce's "Time in a Bottle" applies.

Another one which seems appropos is from "Code Monkey" by Jonathan Coulton:

Code Monkey think someday he have everything;
even pretty girl like you.
Code Monkey just waiting, for now;
Code Monkey think someday, somehow...

...although I'd have to admit that his "First of May" may actually be more apporpriate overall... ;)

Actually, if I had to pick a single song which best described me, I'd have to turn to Weird Al Yankovic:

They see me mowin', my front lawn;
I know they're all thinkin' I'm so white and nerdy...

I'd rather not explain why I like these lyrics so much, as it's rather personal, but here's Sound Of Madness by Shinedown:
Yeah, I get it,
You're an outcast.
Always under attack,
Always coming in last,
Bringing up the past.
No one owes you anything.
I think, you need a shotgun blast,
A kick in the ass,
So paranoid. . .
Watch your back!!

Oh my, here we go...

Another lose cannon gone bi-polar
Slipped down, couldn't get much lower.
Quicksand's got no sense of humor.
I'm still laughing like hell!
You think, that cryin' to me,
Looking so sorry that I'm gonna believe,
You've been infected, by a social disease.
Well then... take your medicine.

I created the Sound of Madness.
Wrote the book on pain.
Somehow I'm still here,
To explain,
That the darkest hour never comes in the night.
You can sleep with a gun.
When you gonna wake up and fight... for yourself?

I'm so sick of this tombstone mentality,
If there's an afterlife,
Then it'll set you free.
But I'm not gonna part the seas.
You're a self-fulfilling prophecy.
You think, that cryin' to me,
Looking so sorry that I'm gonna believe,
You've been infected, by a social disease.
Well then... take your medicine.

I created the Sound of Madness.
Wrote the book on pain.
Somehow I'm still here,
To explain,
That the darkest hour never comes in the night.
You can sleep with a gun.
When you gonna wake up and fight... for yourself?

I created the Sound of Madness.
Wrote the book on pain.
Somehow I'm still here,
To explain,
That the darkest hour never comes in the night.
You can sleep with a gun.
When you gonna wake up...
When you gonna wake up and fight...

A set of three songs that go together as a single piece. These were the first songs I ever heard by Heather Alexander and they pretty well sealed my fandom. If you can find her stuff I highly recommend it. Most of it is Celtic and Filk for those interested.

Tomorrow I Leave for Battle
music: Heather Alexander
lyrics: Philip R. Obemarck

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Love me one more time,
Make this night last forever,
For on the morrow, I leave for battle-

I may survive,
And I shall return to you,
But come the morrow, I leave for battle-

CHORUS:
And if I die, just remember I love you,
And you'll always be mine,
Let us warm up this cold night together,
Come the morrow, I leave for battle-

Until tomorrow,
Let me love you forever,
For come the morrow, I leave for battle

March of Cambreadth,
The music & lyrics: Heather Alexander

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Axes flash, broadsword swing,
Shining armour's piercing ring
Horses run with polished shield,
Fight Those Bastards till They Yield
Midnight mare and blood red roan,
Fight to Keep this Land Your Own
Sound the horn and call the cry,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Follow orders as you're told,
Make Their Yellow Blood Run Cold
Fight until you die or drop,
A Force Like Ours is Hard to Stop
Close your mind to stress and pain,
Fight till You're No Longer Sane
Let not one damn cur pass by,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Guard your women and children well,
Send These Bastards Back to Hell
We'll teach them the ways of war,
They Won't Come Here Any More
Use your shield and use your head,
Fight till Every One is Dead
Raise the flag up to the sky,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

Dawn has broke, the time has come,
Move Your Feet to a Marching Drum
We'll win the war and pay the toll,
We'll Fight as One in Heart and Soul
Midnight mare and blood red roan,
Fight to Keep this Land Your Own
Sound the horn and call the cry,
How Many of Them Can We Make Die!

REPEAT FIRST VERSE

Courage Knows No Bounds
music: Heather Alexander
lyrics: Philip R. Obermarck

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I looked across the battlefield,
Blood seeping from my wounds-
My comrades, they did never yield,
For courage knows no bounds-
And yet, I thought as I stood there,
Of all that it had cost-
For what we gained, it seemed not fair ,
For all that we had lost-

They spoke of honour, faith and pride,
defending for our home-
Through honour all my friends have died,
their faith left me alone-
We fought for greed, we fought for fame,
we killed too much to tell-
The devil and God were both the same,
we worshipped only Hell-

We fought it seemed for a thousand years,
a million nights and days-
Sharing one laugh with a hundred tears,
seeing clearly through a haze-
Then came that day I know not when,
beneath a blood red sun,
A-top a pile of dying men,
they said that we had won-

Another tract of land is all
the territory gained-
Will that ever pay for all
the lives here lost or maimed?
Bodies lying all around,
blood bathing them in red,
Their white eyes staring at the sun,
these, the countless dead?

I looked across the battlefield,
blood seeping from my wounds-
My comrades, they did never yield,
for courage knows no bounds-
Grand Low Maker of Mischief, Claw of Chaos, Fang of Anarchy

politics: n. pl. from the Grk polis, meaning many, and the OE ticia, meaning blood sucking insects.

Azrael: I loved those lyrics, I'm definitely going to have to check her stuff out.

These lyrics aren't the most well written, but I find they're really relatable, especially to past relationships...

Wake Up by Three Days Grace

I’m not sober all the time
You bring me down at least you try
Until we see this eye to eye
I don’t want you

I must be running out of luck
Cause you’re just not drunk enough to fuck
And now I’ve had it up to here
I don’t, I don’t want you

It took so long to see
You walked away from me
When I need you
Wake up I’m pounding on the door
I’m not the man I was before
Where the hell are you
When I need you
Wake up I’m pounding on the door
I won’t hurt you anymore
Where the hell are you
When I need you

I’m not angry all the time
You push me down at least you try
Until we see this eye to eye
I don’t want you

It took so long to see
You walked away from me
When I need you
Wake up I’m pounding on the door
I’m not the man I was before
Where the hell are you
When I need you
Wake up I’m pounding on the door
I won’t hurt you anymore
Where the hell are you
When I need you

It took so long to see
You walked away from me
When I need you

Wake up I’m pounding on the door
I’m not the man I was before
Where the hell are you
When I need you
Wake up I’m pounding on the door
I won’t hurt you anymore
Where the hell are you
When I need you

Looks like I'm gonna have to look up some more music...

Eva by Nightwish (If this song could have come about 14 years ago, that would have been great...) My childhood in a nutshell.

6:30 winter morn
Snow keeps falling, silent dawn
A rose by any other name
Eva leaves her Swanbrook home
A kindest heart which always made
Me ashamed of my own
She walks alone but not without her name

Eva flies away
Dreams the world far away
In this cruel children's game
There's no friend to call her name
Eva sails away
Dreams the world far away
The Good in her will be my sunflower field

Mocked by man to depths of shame
Little girl with life ahead
For a memory of one kind word
She would stay among the beasts
Time for one more daring dream
Before her escape, edenbeam
We kill with her own loving heart

Eva flies away
Dreams the world far away
In this cruel children's game
There's no friend to call her name
Eva sails away
Dreams the world far away
The Good in her will be my sunflower field
Vanishing Elder of the Noms; She who Plays With Madness; One Among the Fence; Tittycake Mistress.

It's gone from light to gray
But I'll move those clouds away
Letting the sun shine through
In this ode to you

Let the demons have their place
If so, it's angels you'll create
And disguised within the dark
Light will wait

My heart; I owe you my soul

Will you--
Please accept
Please accept this ode?
This is all for you
Transcend...

Because I do nothing simply, I will quote a singularly obtuse bit of late 1800's poetry and let everyone else puzzle it out. I happen to really love it. It's from The Prophet's Paradise by Robert Chambers.

If but the Vine and Love Abjuring Band
Are in the Prophets' Paradise to stand,
Alack, I doubt the Prophets' Paradise,
Were empty as the hollow of one's hand.
Further affiant sayeth not.

been listening to alot of Iron Maiden lately, and especially their latest album "A matter of life and death", lots of good lyrics on that album, but the lyrics on the song "different world" stands out to me, as cheesy as parts of it might be to some:

You lead me on the path
Keep showing me the way
I feel a little lost
A little strange today

I think I'll take a hold
Of whatever comes my way
Then we'll see what happens
Take it day by day

I thought I had it all
I had it all worked out
Just what my future held
That there would be no doubt

But then the card came up
And I took another turn
But I don't know if it's
Fulfilment that I yearn

Tell me what you can hear
And then tell me what you see
Everybody has a different way
To view the world

I would like you to know
When you see the simple things
To appreciate this life
It's not too late to learn

Don't want to be here
Somewhere I'd rather be
But when I get there
I might find it's not for me

Don't know what I want
Or where I want to be
I'm feeling more confused
The more the days go by

and one of my all time favourite songs/lyrics must be "Hallowed be thy name"

Im waiting in my cold cell when the bell begins to chime
Reflecting on my past life and it doesnt have much time
Cos at 5 oclock they take me to the gallows pole
The sands of time for me are running low

When the priest comes to read me the last rites
I take a look through the bars at the last sights
Of a world that has gone very wrong for me

Can it be theres some sort of error
Hard to stop the surmounting terror
Is it really the end not some crazy dream

Somebody please tell me that Im dreaming
Its not so easy to stop from screaming
But words escape me when I try to speak
Tears they flow but why am I crying
After all I am not afraid of dying
Dont believe that there is never an end

As the guards march me out to the courtyard
Someone calls from a cell God be with you
If theres a God then why has he let me die?

As I walk all my life drifts before me
And though the end is near Im not sorry
Catch my soul cos its willing to fly away

Mark my words please believe my soul lives on
Please dont worry now that I have gone
Ive gone beyond to see the truth

When you know that your time is close at hand
Maybe then youll begin to understand
Life down there is just a strange illusion.

theres tons more lyrics/songs that I like alot and are special to me, but those are the two I could think about now

I tend to think of modern showtunes as applicable to my life.

There's: Do You Hear The People Sing? (Do you hear the people sing, singing the song of angry men/It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again/When the beating of your heart echoes the beating of the drums/There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes), In My Life (What's the matter with you, Cosette?/Have you been too much on your own?/So many things unseen, so many things unknown), A Heart Full Of Love (A heart full of love/A heart full of song/I'm doing everything all wrong!), A Little Fall of Rain (You're here/That's all I need to know), and Turning (Nothing changes, nothing ever will/Every year another brat, another mouth to fill), Facade (There's a face that we wear in the cold light of day/It's society's mask, it's society's way) from Jekyll and Hyde, Mama Who Bore Me (Some pray that one day/Christ will come a'calling/They light a candle and hope that it glows) and The Bitch of Living (It's the bitch of living/As someone you can't stand) from Spring Awakening, and okay I'll admit it Fantasies Come True (Cuz now/My love/I'm getting what I've always been dreaming of) from Avenue Q.

I have several songs over the last few years that have meant a great deal to me, and that sum up how I have felt at particular times.

I'll start with the less wonderful points in time.

When I was young and stupid, I did things that I'm not proud of. For the most part, I interacted with people in a way that was ultimately damaging to myself. And to punish myself for it, I used to cut myself. Yeah, sounds dumb, doesn't it?

Bad Habit - The Dresden Dolls
Biting keeps your words at bay
Tending to the sores that stay
Happiness is just a gash away
When i open a familiar scar
Pain goes shooting like a star
Comfort hasn't failed to follow so far...
It's a great song, regardless of it's relatively morbid topic.

There are quite a few White Stripes songs that have meant something to me over the last few years. The first one is because over time I have noticed that I am less and less capable of doing the things that are expected by polite society, and I am more capable of doing the things that actually make people happy.

The White Stripes - I'm Finding it harder to be a Gentleman
Well I'm finding it hard to say
that I need you twenty times a day
I feel comfortable so baby why
don't you feel the same?
have a doctor come and visit us
and tell us which one is sane

Well I never said I wouldn't
Throw my jacket in the mud for you
but my father gave it to me so
maybe I should carry you
then you said
"You almost dropped me"
so then I did
and I got mud on my shoes
The White Stripes - Little Room
Well you're in your little room
and you're working on something good
but if it's really good
you're gonna need a bigger room
and when you're in the bigger room
you might not know what to do
you might have to think of
how you got started sitting in your little room
I had a falling out with a girl who refused to stop coming around to my house (to visit my housemate, she said. To bother me, I suspect), even after I told her she wasn't welcome anymore. She's the only person I can think of that I have completely turned my back on. And this song goes out to her.

The White Stripes - There's no room for you here
There's no home for you here girl, go away
There's no home for you here

I'd like to think that all of this constant interaction
Is just the kind of make you drive yourself away
Each simple gesture done by me is counteracted
And leaves me standing here with nothing else to say

Completely baffled by a backward indication
That an inspired word will come across your tongue
Hands moving upward to propel the situation
Have simply halted
And now the conversation's done

There's no home for you here girl, go away
There's no home for you here

I'm only waiting for the proper time to tell you
That it's impossible to get along with you
It's hard to look you in the face when we are talking
So it helps to have a mirror in the room

I've not been really looking forward to the performance
But there's my cue and there's a question on your face
Fortunately I have come across an answer
Which is go away
And do not leave a trace

There's no home for you here girl, go away
There's no home for you here

Waking up for breakfast
Burning matches
Talking quietly
Breaking baubles
Throwing garbage
Drinking soda
Looking happy
Taking pictures
So completely stupid
Just go away

There's no home for you here girl, go away
There's no home for you here
And the final one, which apart from the occasions that have had relevance to the above songs, has more or less summed up my way of thinking about the human race. This song goes out to all of you.

The Cat Empire - The Crowd
Lord unchain my hands
let me sing inside the crowded trams
let me dance among the traffic jams
we're going to sleep
on the St Kilda sands

Lord unbind my feet
let me mingle with the good people
we meet
water rising up into the street
unbind my feet

‘The apparition of these faces in
the crowd;
petals on a wet black bough"
Ezra Pound found the formula
our houses are rectangular
but life is curved not angular
so when things start to strangle ya
remember
rain still falls on the halls of power
new babies being born every hour
and the eagle keeps watch on the old clock tower
over me...

CHORUS

On the train I refrain from sitting with head and shoulders bowed
they told me time is of the essence
no wandering allowed
but then I saw a pretty girl
whose features stood out in the crowd
went ten minutes past my stop waiting for her to look around
I'm just another clown kicking around in Melbourne town
cooling out, relaxing watching the
world go round
so if you ever have the time
and you want to go drink some wine
I'd rather greet you with a smile
than greet you with a frown...

Lord unchain my hands
let me sing inside the crowded trams
let me dance among the traffic jams
we're going to sleep
on the St Kilda sands

Lord unbind my feet
let me mingle with the good people
we meet
water rising up into the street
unbind my feet
There are more, but that one was the most important. The most special. I still get little chills when I hear it.

Okay, finally coming back to this thread for a few more lyrics.

From Nature Boy by Nat King Cole, these lyrics have stuck with me since the first time I heard them.

There was a boy, a very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far over land and sea
A little shy, and sad of eye, but very wise was he

And then one day, a magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things, fools and kings
This he said to me

The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love
And be loved in return

From Pink Floyd's classic album "Wish You Were Here", a song that has strong personal significance. Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Whenever I hear this song, I think of the crazy troubled girl that was my first love.

Remember when you were young, you shone like the sun.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!

I had quite forgotten about this one...

Who would ever have thought that a black metal band would write an ode to true freindship (at least it can be interpreted in this way...)

Emperor - The Acclamation of Bonds

Vide
Ravens caw in reverence
Anthems to the Welkin at dusk
In celebration of the few
The kin
Beyond flesh
Beyond words
Those of the core
Beyond gods
As gods received
I float among them
On wings once broken
Now gleaming black
I share their song
Of words unspoken
Cries of the past

In times of fiendish tempest
Bloodlust turns against the coil
Hungry for the fall
I greet the pit
Blind Savage
Cursing Life

Yet, at the moment of my final step
The hands and golden chains are given
Bidding me that which can not be deprived
The bonds of trust and unity
Till the end

Brethren and sisters of my circle
I acclaim thee all
When guiding stars are clouded and deranged
Fear not to take my hand

The bonds of trust and unity
