Alright, so season 5 finale.


Honestly, I wish this had been a 3 part finale, just to help flesh out a few things they ended up rushing. Not that I'm complaining mind, I think they delegated the time wisely. But I would have enjoyed seeing just a bit more of the alternate timelines, a bit more time on Starlight's backstory, and a bit more time on her being reformed.

But those are minor issues at best, and the rest of the finale was just awesome. I especially enjoyed the fact that Twilight and Starlight's fights weren't just one sided affairs, but a series of back and forth victories. It was just the circumstances favored Starlight to the point that Twilight needed to achieve complete and utter victory within a nearly impossibly narrow window of opportunity in order to win.

Also, I think someone on the writing team must have thought the fanfic community didn't have enough to do already, because all those bad alt-timelines are pretty much just baiting the fanfic authors.

Agreed. Best season yet, and a great finale.

I can't really get the image of Raindow Dash with a prosthetic wing out of my head, it's just so heartbreaking, not to mention seeing the Pie sisters at war. My over-analytical mind has been churning over the finale for a while now, and I've developed some head-canon: since each alternate timeline featured one successful villain, the others must have either been defeated by the good guys or that timeline's supreme villain (or they saw that Equestria was already conquered and decided to keep on walking). But in that wasteland at the end, perhaps several of them were vying for control. Like, maybe it was Sombra versus Tirek until nothing was left.

I like that they went for a unexpectedly dark and somewhat subtle story instead of just trying to out-epic the season 4 finale. I think I said it at the beginning of the season, it's like they chose to hit a soft-reboot on the escalating-stakes nature of the season bookends and give the show a chance to breath before ramping things up again. But it also feels a bit like the makers of the show were expecting season 5 to be the last one, with all the callbacks throughout the season and the finale basically being a review of everything the Mane 6 have accomplished. Plus that final shot felt more conclusion-y than usual for a season ending. Fortunately, season 6 is in production, plus we have that movie to look forward to in 2017. I feel like the show is in capable hands and is as strong as it ever has been.

Alas, no new eps for who knows how long:

...MLP is on hiatus...Doctor Who is on hiatus...:(( well, at least Doctor Who has a Christmas special coming up.
