I get why they did it, but I still think that having two moms in this day and age would not have been that weird.

These days, not that wierd (unless your in a town with 6 churches and didn't get a stoplight until '95), 16 years ago was another story.

Also, somewhat beside the point, since neither of them had any need to tell everyone they both are Mel's moms any more than Melissa shows around her altar to Hekate.

I'm Thinking back over Dakotah's various appearances in the strip and her actions.

Well, obviously. She let herself be suckered by the wand, no questions asked, to begin with. Self-righteousness and sense of superiority never made anyone smarter... the opposite cases are known. And for a good reason.

But Dakota spends a lot of time away, doing grave-robber *ahem* archologist-adventurer stuff...she doesn't need to act manly at all times. She could be a femenine woman during her trips across the globe...she shouldn't have forgotten how to act girly...she should be able to do so whenever she wished.

No. We saw her eyes behind her shades back when she first appeared, while she was talkig to Cerise and Jacqui.

Again, though, it would have made Mel and her friends curious about the exact circumstances of her birth, poking around exactly where they shouldn't.

Being a teen, she was born around the late 90's, and let's remember that back then gay parenthood was way much more a touchy subject, so maybe on that time they thought (erroneously) it would be less complicated for Melissa to have a mom and a dad.
And now I'm wondering, are there lingering true feelings of love between them after spending so much time playing mom and dad, sharing mind and body, and taking care of each other during finantial bumps, sickness and the hard work of raising a child?

Well, it's said that opposites attract - perhaps the truce was called when they realised neither could completely hide the other, or indeed harm each other (although they probably know this and take full advantage of it - trying to outwit / kill each other is probably their idea of fun...) They may have had a temporary mental block when trying to fight each other before Mel, Tandy and Sandi interrupted - their attacks certainly weren't having much effect on each other until Mel pinned them to the wall (with a little help from Tacky Wand).

Silly thought: especially considering Anastasia left the world of supervillainy sixteen years ago but still wants a slice of the action, while Dakota's mourning her girliness... perhaps saving the school will involve all five currently in the household: Anastasia, Dakota, Mel, Tandy and Sandy.

Although there have been numerous Sailor Moon shout-outs, I can't place all of them as potential princess and guardians. Mel would be the equivalent of Usagi / Moon - she's a bit scatterbrained, clumsy and likes the easy way out, didn't really want to be President, Faith claimed she was the only one who'd be able to defeat the Big Bad (Cerise), so Tandy and Sandi are semi-reluctantly following her lead. Sandi's easy to place as the equivalent of Ami / Mercury - the shy bookworm of the group. Tandy could potentially be Rei / Mars, but Anastasia probably fits the bill better (so Makoto / Jupiter for Tandy? Needless to say, sixteen years previously Anastasia was the equivalent of Queen Beryl, lying back while minions did all the work). Dakota's appearance and pretending to be a man are reminiscent of Seiya / Star Fighter, although her swords could potentially also recall the Manga version of Mamoru / Tuxedo Kamen (apparently in the manga he did have sword fighting experience and healing powers, so wasn't just limited to throwing roses).

[Gotoh] Dakota's last name is unlikely to be Delacroix, Wolfhart, Whiteclaw, Frostbottom, Morningfire, Lynn or Love either - Purvis, Sprynter, Futakuchi and Twigitt are unlikely contenders as well

Doesn't look like that. Also, Melissa have seen them mock fighting before, and that was not it.

Sandi have personal interest in this. Tandy may be given, obviously - her dramatic crap works both ways. Anastasia, no idea, but she did nothing that would make Melissa explicitly distrust her, and probably indeed wants some action. At very least, Melissa needs to ask for some good mind-shielding spell, since she isn't stupid enough to rely on/obey/completely trust the wand, and already demonstrated this.
But how, given both the situation and her knowledge, Melissa can possibly trust Dakota now?

The one stated reason we have so far is that she was looking for a way to kill Anastasia when their truce inevitably ended.

That and it might be a good way to pay the bills. I'm not sure Dakota or Anastasia have any marketable skills even if they could forge credentials. It looks like Melissa has an upper middle class life and I doubt a lowly archaeologist could pay for it. Anastasia if she wasn't deposed as queen of the Shadow Kingdom might get her funding from her subjects.
