Serious question: is that a typo on loose ("My shoelaces are loose.") versus lose ("Sometimes I win at strip checkers, sometimes I lose at strip checkers.") or is that some weird Brazilian humor that my uncultured American self wouldn't understand?

I kinda thought so, too, but then she's never really been a really big girl, has she? Maybe it's the blood diet.

I think Layla eats regular food too. After all, they have cookbooks. Anyway, she might be slender but she doesn't look unhealthy to me.
