Publisher List & Discussion

Post by sarydactl »

Hey all, I just thought I'd put something together for everyone to (possibly) use~. If you have something to add to the list, then comment and I'll update it as soon as I can. More specific guidelines are linked. If you are considering the publisher, read and reread the specific guidelines.

Events and Contests:
Annual YenPress Talent Search (currently not in progress)

Accepting Submissions:
Antarctic Press - http://www.antarctic-press.com/html/ver ... ssions.php
It is far more desirable for you as a submitting artist to be versed in penciling, inking, and writing. As publishers, we prefer creators who can do it all. If you can't ink your own work, you can team yourself with an inker, but remember, the royalty will now be spread between you and the inker. The same deal applies if you work with a writer. It's much more beneficial for you to be multi-talented in these areas, but it's not essential. If you can do it all, then it's better for you and for us.
Dark Horse - http://www.darkhorse.com/Company/Submissions
Welcome to the Dark Horse Comics Submissions Guidelines. This page will explain what you must include when submitting your materials to Dark Horse Comics. If you read through this document and still have questions, please visit the Submissions portion of our Frequently Asked Questions.
gomanga/Seven Seas - http://gomanga.com/about/index.php#contact
Seven Seas is always looking for talented manga artists for future projects, so if you are an artist 18 years of age or older, please feel free to write to us with a link to your online portfolio so that we can see your high quality, sequential art. Please note that we are currently not accepting any form of unsolicited story proposals and/or submissions from writers. We will also not supply any form of art critique or advice on how to become or "make it" as a manga artist, so please don't ask.
eigoMANGA - http://eigomanga.com/ (Company Info > Submission Policy)
Since 2000, eigoMANGA has been the primary publisher and business partner for independant comic creators and professional studios. We always accept submissions for new manga projects.
eManga - http://www.emanga.com/submissions/
We are currently accepting open submissions of completed works for inclusion on our Emanga.com storefront.
Kiseki Manga - http://www.kisekimanga.com/submissions - (Australia residents only.)
Kiseki is the new one and only manga magazine in Australia that aims to bring the very best of manga bi monthly.
We are currently welcoming submissions now from all over Australia. Do not miss this chance to chase your dream of becoming a manga artist.
Lime Media Hawai'i - http://www.limemediahawaii.com/submissions
The Hawaii Star Manga Project is looking for new, original comic/manga stories for publication. We welcome all comic creators, especially Hawaii's artists (and former Hawaii residents) to submit story proposals for consideration.
MangaMagazine - http://www.mangamagazine.net/welcomenewauthor
MangaMagazine is always interested in publishing and promoting new authors. Through our unique subscription based system, our goal is to make it possible for independent manga authors to succeed in the manga industry without being eaten alive by the big publication houses. However, in order to ensure that all of our authors are top quality and committed to bringing consistent and exciting manga, we have a few minimum requirements for prospective authors.
P2 Manga - http://p2manga.com/faq
If you have a story you'd like to submit, you should fill out the light novel submission form. If you want the story in manga format, sorry we do not accept projects such as these. You must have your own artist. We do not provide an artist for you at this time. You are more than welcomed to submit an artist/writer team submission.
YenPress - http://www.yenpress.com/about/
If you are interested in pitching a project to Yen Press, please include a project summary (indicating your intended audience), a plot outline complete with character descriptions and initial concept designs, and as above a minimum of five to ten pages of sequential art in various stages. This does not have to be final art for the project in question although that would be welcome.
Ambiguous (send inquiries before submitting):
Go! Comi - http://www.gocomi.com/
We believe that the current popularity of Japanese popular culture in the United States heralds a revolution in the entertainment industry. It is our aim to expand the readership of manga by developing new series for both the American and Japanese markets. We are actively developing numerous manga and manga-related projects which bring together deep talent pools from both sides of the Pacific, creating new collaborations that will increase the scope and depth of this incredible art form.
UDON Entertainment - http://www.udoncreative.com/index_about.php
UDON is an award-winning Canadian-based art collective formed in 2000 to provide high-quality creative services to the entertainment industry. After a decade of working with some of the biggest and best names in the industry, we're still going strong.
Not Accepting Submissions:
DelRey/Suvudu - http://graphic-novels-manga.suvudu.com/
(no quote available)
ITCH Manga - http://www.itchpublishing.com/news/services/artists/
I’m sorry, but ITCH does not currently accept pitches or submissions from creators. ITCH operates on a very small scale, with one person doing most of the work involved, and I want to focus on doing right by the books we already have before expanding further. Thank you for taking an interest in ITCH, and please continue to support independent comics and manga by buying books and spreading the word.
VIZ Media - http://www.viz.com/company/faq#5
At the present moment, all of the manga that appears in our magazines come directly from manga that has been serialized and published in Japan.
Defunct/Discontinued:
Tokyopop

I'm not familiar with any of their published books, but their website doesn't exactly say "professional."
http://www.p2manga.com/

(Note to copywriters: You don't need more than one exclamation mark in your company slogan.)

EDIT: To be fair, I'm getting the impression this is a self-starter. A fan of manga who just went ahead and started her own company to publish her work. At the very least, gotta admire the DIY attitude.

I think they have ties with Wi-Fi press, a puerto Rican publisher, I think they're both just started companies...

Should I remove it? I thought about it, but decided against it, since it appeared that they WOULD publish and get an ISPN for things...all of the companies on the list looked like that one at some point in time, and grew. Since they seem to be legitimate, I kept them on...

Just leave it on, I think. May as well have a comprehensive list.

On that note, how do you guys feel about self-publishing? (This won't really go on the list, but I'm curious, lol.) Amazon will publish things digitally and give out quite a bit more royalties than pro companies (by quite a bit more, I mean triple or quadruple)...there's a novelist who's become a millionaire that way . _. . I've contemplated using it more than once, though I don't have anything polished enough to sell yet...

PS] Not talking about vanity presses. That's just silly.

If you think their site was bad now, you should of seen it last year. xD So PINK~ DIY you say? I wouldn't say that looking at their "published" books. More like they had them printed though Lulu or something. ._. Hardly DIY imo.

Yeah, don't take it down.Where would all the lunchbox Kids go to "publish" their mamgas? 8D; *gets ran over by a panda*

I think self-publishing is a wonderful thing.~ The more you order the better of savers you will have. The only down fall to that is that if you need to sell what you order. xD; Lulu is nice cause the provide the ISBN number, but I hear it's kind of expensive. What was it? Create Space, they had some problems with the page sizes for some ppl trying to print comics with them before. Ka-Blam is really good from what I hear from friends. There's a whole lot more sites I can't think of right now. But uh, yeah. >,>

And if anything, I would look outside the net for self-publishing. Nothing like going to a book printing place and getting that eye to eye contact and working things out if something might go wrong...... or haggling. >v>a

*Cough* I self-publish my manga(comic? whatever.) It's nothing massive or amazing to say the least. >_>;

One of the reasons I'm considering amazon is because of the digital options. It's completely free to post it, as far as I know, and it literally costs nothing to the author OR publisher :9 . You also automatically get people looking at your work--well, depending on how much you choose to sell it. It also makes things like online magazines a possibility * o* . But I don't think I'm famous enough to start a magazine with other people...X3 " Gotta spread notoriety n stuff.

My main idea was to publish a chapter, and then slowly release it for free, page by page, somewhere else online...capitalizing on people's eagerness, while keeping my 'freedom of information ftw' ethical practice kind of in play. Have I ever mentioned that? charging for art is silly, although getting paid for it is not . _. still working on this.

(also. psst. anyone think starting a magazine is cool? . _. )
