As far as we know, Alex hadn't had sexual feelings towards men "until now". Do you know why I put "until now" into quotation marks? Because he still doesn't have sexual feelings towards boys. The only one he's feeling them towards is a girl that is dressing as a boy. I can usually tell instantly that someone is dressed up in the clothes of opposite sex and trying to blend in. Alex however is not that bright but that doesn't mean his eyes, his ears and his nose (hormones) are not sending him signals that that "guy" over there is actually a girl and that's why he's getting them feelings. But he's too dumb to realize it and thus thinking he's gay/bi when he's not. But because he's kinda dumb he might convince himself anyways.

The only qualm with 'experiment bisexual Alex' is that rather than experiment with being bisexual the poor schmuck ended up thinkiong he is gay because of a girl crossdressing as a guy.

And partially because of how society reflects on female and male bisexuals, I guess. For guys, it's a 0 or 1 situation. "You're gay?" is the automatic reaction if a guy shows signs of attraction towards a guy - bisexuality rarely ever seems to be considered at first.
