It's probably a social-pecking-order thing.

Yes I do. None of those mascots ever influenced my decisions. All they did was remind me that their products exist and while I may not represent the entirety of the consumer base I would say I am in the majority of people who know better. Advertisements like this get people's attention and once the advertiser has it then they start selling you their wares.Zorlond wrote:Talking lizards, fat-slinging clowns, fiscally responsible mimes, and completely non-committal red pills, and you somehow believe most consumers are smart enough to know better? *deadpan*brasca wrote: and most consumers are smart enough to know better.

This is a contradiction in terms. Unless you meant you're in a majority within the tiny subset of people who know better. The rest are Pavlov's children.brasca wrote:I am in the majority of people who know better.

Conditioning forms the basis of much of learned human behavior. Nowadays, this knowledge has also been exploited by commercial advertising. An effective commercial should be able to manipulate the response to a stimulus (like seeing a product's name) which initially does not provoke any feeling. The objective is to train people to make the "false" connection between positive emotions (e.g. happiness or feeling attractive) and the particular brand of consumer goods being advertised.

I feel good about how good the ad is, but never connect the quality of the ad with the quality of the productZorlond wrote:This is a contradiction in terms.
