I never quite understood how someone can fantasm over celebrities.

Probably because she is so unattainable he'll never be disappointed if she doesn't live up to expectations. If things with Marie fell through then that would change everything with a childhood friend and possibly for the worst. Alex can always get another idol. Marie would be impossible to replace.

If she's gonna take the initiative, then she should take the initiative; climb in the good Captain's lap and lay a big wet kiss on his lips, and preferably slip him some tongue too. Talking can be misinterpreted or ignored by the oblivious, but not that. Not unless the guy is gay or dead.

And yeah, celebrity crushes are safe, because the one with the crush never has to risk rejection. Many celebrity crushers don't even want to meet the object of their crush for fear of saying or doing something stupid, especially since there are likely to be cameras and microphones in their face at the time to capture the moment for posterity.

Not quite a total stranger - they have met, and she even spoke to him and gave him her (web) address. That's a lot more interaction than many fans have with their celebrity crushes.

To be fair to Alex - Marie appears to only just be emerging from a "love is soppy and dumb" adolescent phase, and you can bet that she's expressed those ideas to him. He's probably thoroughly inculcated with the idea that she is not a sexual being. Which may mean that he'll instinctively reject any hints or suggestions that involve treating her as one. It's only polite and rational.

Yeah, I don't see why people think guys should look out for any hints of romantic interest from any woman they know. We live in modern times, we should no longer need that old "man conquers, while woman allows to be conquered " rule and embrace the new era of clear communication regardless who is of which gender.
