Sandra is really getting into the show here.
I'm loving it.

...what exactly does the boss expect him to do? If he's already got enough for a demo, they're all but deep-sixing an entire game and commissioning a new one...

And getting a bit carried away. She's going to talk herself into a corner soon. She'll probably suddenly find that she needs, oh, a talented artist who works cheap and who's prepared to drop everything and fly to Paris straight away. Something impossible like that.

Yep. When you smoke cigars while sitting in leather armchairs and overseeing your empire on big vidscreens, you can do stuff like that, and expect your lowly minions to handle the details.

Happened before. Resident Evil 4 actually showed a working demo of a totally different game when it was first shown and they totally, as you said, deep-sixed that and changed into a whole different direction.

One could say that the whole reboot was pandering for profit. Making everything darker and edgier and more violent because that's the only thing execs think will sell. "Look at that game, it sold millions of copies because it's mature, violent, and gritty. Why we can sell millions too if we make one of our already established characters like that! Who cares if the character and games before were lighthearted fare that had a significant female fan base. Girls don't play games anymore, it's all about the Call of Duty, Madden playing bro-gamer."

Good to know Doctor Claw has finally found a new job and is now making video games! World domination and tracking down a certain inspector was certainly not a path for him...

I would remind skeptical folks about the XBox One(-Eighty) and the complete shift in direction there. And there are plenty of examples of games that have gotten a complete rewrite. It's slightly unusual for a game company to actually listen to customer complaints, but it's not outside of the realm of possibility. Think New Coke, or for that matter, the XBox One where Microsoft has announced they're listening to customer feedback (though it helped in their case they had Sony scoring more pre-orders).

And for that matter, while we know that they have a CGI trailer (what was shown), it's not clear how much of the game has been written.

Of course, that's not entirely inconsistent with the new version being Tristan's true artistic vision. You think that Darker and Edgier will sell best, you recruit overgrown-adolescent-boy creatives whose visions are always murky and noxious, so they'll throw themselves heart and soul into following through on that idea.

you could, but i wouldn't. the fact that tristan there is objecting to tampering with his 'opus' indicates that he actually cares about the project on something other than a monetary level. whether we like tristan's sense of aesthetics or his social politics is irrelevant to the fact that dr. claw is taking control of the project away from it's artist.

Okay, Sandra, you've won. Power down before you make a fool of yourself. Tristan, if you are smart, you will pretend this was the game plan all along and announce the new game with Chamelia's extra powers.

Possibly somebody needs to tell him that "opus" just means "work".

He may mean "magnum opus", I guess. But deliberately or not, this makes him look a bit sloppy-minded to me...

That's got to depend whether you consider videogames to be, not only art, but art which can be the product of a dominant creative vision, I guess. I personally don't have a dog in that fight, but Tristan's moral claim to be some kind of sole creator has got to be compromised a little by the fact that he's using a legacy character.

Too late. Her last speech bubble means that she's skied over the edge of the cliff.

Yay, I called it. :) They're doing a New Coke:
The American public's reaction to the change was negative and the new cola was a major marketing failure. The subsequent reintroduction of Coke's original formula, re-branded as "Coca-Cola Classic", resulted in a significant gain in sales.
As for Tristan's "artistic vision", what's "artistic" about copying almost every single recent game focused on the male teen demographic? Also, if your dream is to create an incredibly violent game, you don't do it as part of an established series not asssociated with ultra-violence.

as opposed to copying 20 year old games and focusing on the nostalgia junkie demographic?

and why not create a new & radically different version of an established character?
