My exact reaction to this: "Ray... is a fucking idiot."

Ray might not be very bright but he obviously knows what is going on - he just doesn't care. There are people in real life who think you're not gay as long as you don't kiss or you're only on top or balls don't touch or whatever. Even if Nathan doesn't really believe in his "it's not gay because we're both hetero" philosophy and only says it to convince indecisive guys to bend over, Roy apparently does.

I have trouble seeing the cast as poor manipulated victims since they get some sweet deals out of those meetings with Nathan (guatanteed roles, condo), when they could tell him to jump off a window and walk away. If anything the victims are the other candidates who don't get a fair shot at the role (Dillon got a taste of it when he arrived after Roy during that first audition). Nathan is a sleaze but so is anyone willing to accept his offers.

Not to mention all the other people who put money into these film projects and who get neither the guaranteed best actors in the various roles nor nookie with hot young idiots. Though Dillon and Ray both seem to be fairly good actors. Still, that's the real problem with any sort of corruption, isn't it? It stops things from working right.

I doubt that we'll ever see Mrs Horn in these comics - that would make things a bit too serious - but her opinions on Dillon and Amber might be interesting. Even if she is the sort who doesn't give a damn about her husband being serially unfaithful behind her back, those two have taken him for the cost of a nice apartment in central Montreal. That's family money which ought to have been half hers. (Unless Nathan embezzled it from the company, in which case it's the proceeds of crime.) And if she has any self-respect, or if she doesn't regard the marriage as a convenient sham, well, what might she say to our two cute heroes?

The interesting thing is that Amber, for all her loud refusals to be ashamed of her past career, does think the second way. She wants out of the porn business, and she has difficulty facing old friends like Zii, let alone her parents. She also seems desperately to want her sexual relationship with Ray to be emotionally deeper and possibly even monogamous. This may be something she needs to get a bit clearer in her mind; is she a proud former professional, or a recovering whore?
I think you're indulging in a false duality. Also, I don't think Amber was ever a prostitute, was she? She was a porn actress, which has rather different power dynamics.

Note that the casting couch stuff seems to have started with Nathan, who doesn't appear to be involved in the porn scene at all.

Oh, I won't deny that the rhetoric leads one towards the fallacy of the excluded middle at times. But Amber's feelings about her past career seem to be ambiguous at best. She never does seem to have decided how she'll handle it when success as a straight actress inevitably causes her porn career to become widespread knowledge, though we've seen her worry about it.

And Amber was never a prostitute, so far as we know (apart from the whole "trading a sex act for an apartment" thing, of course). But like it or not, she was in the sex industry; she had sex, many times, for money. The power dynamics may be a little different, but the public image and a lot of the psychology are much the same - and if Ruby or her parents or whoever used casual terms like "whore", she'd just look pedantic if she tried to argue the point.
