Well, one gets mistaken for one and the other dresses up like one occasionally, so you're close, Dillon. :p

Everyone here knows I'm not exactly a big fan of Ruby, but that conspiratorial smile between her an Zii in panel 4 is ABSOLUTE GOLD!!!! =)) =)) =))

Also, why am I not astonished Dillon likes ice cream banana hammocks? :P

She is indeed a wonderful artist who could doubtless turn her hand to anything, but from what I've seen, I don't get the feeling that she's very interested in depicting some of those bits in all their wrinkly Lovecraftian glory.

Ah, the advantages of having a hobby; you can make friends with shared interests. I'm getting the feeling we'll see a bit more of Zii in this comic, so that Giz can get some use out of the most emotionally complex member of the Household of Three while the plot over there focuses on the other two. Ruby and Zii can play off each other interestingly, too; Zii's life experience balancing Ruby's organized focus. They're bound to have some casual chats about their private lives sometime, and I could see each of them asking useful thought-provoking questions about the other's love life.

Meanwhile, presumably, Ruby will aim to get some Dillon mugs and stuff made up, along with the Dillon calendar - got to have a range of stuff to sell off the booth.

That fourth panel makes me hear the narrator from The Grinch:

"Then she got an idea. An awful idea. The Ruby got a wonderful, *awful* idea!"

I can't believe it's taken me this long to realize that a big reason straight women are so attracted to Fujoshi manga is that it helps them deal with their anxieties about female sexuality and casual sex. Particularly when it comes to being judged by society for having such desires. I can't really explain it well, but... Fujoshi allows women to play out their fantasies using gay men as a conduit, but removes the threatening straight men who might judge them for being lustful and women who would shame them for doing the same. There is a "taboo" connection between gay men and lustful women. They are both breaking out of typical gender roles and doing the opposite of what traditional society says they are supposed to do. For gay men, it's not being "manly" enough, and for pursuing casual sex with men. for lustful women, it's not acting like a proper lady and also pursuing casual sex with men.

I'm sure that there's a lot of that, especially with Ruby here. However, I suspect that, in general, there's also a lot of the same reason why straight men watch a lot of porn featuring lesbians; twice as much of the stuff that they want to see, all naked and up for it, and none of the stuff that they don't find attractive. After all, looking at the characters here - do you really think that Zii has any anxieties about female sexuality and casual sex?

As for Ruby, there's another, related, factor that helps explain her specific interest in yaoi. She's a virgin, and still very much stuck in the early/mid-teens stage of her emotional development. She's understandably scared, or at least nervous, of sex, especially as she has personal hang-ups about appearing undignified or vulnerable. She's getting over the worst of this, but for now, she needs a fantasy outlet. Because yaoi doesn't feature any women, there's less danger of her projecting herself into the scene and feeling threatened, and anyway, the men it features are sensitive pretty boys, so there's less potential for a lightly-built, mild-mannered woman to feel scared by the idea of sex with them. And because it has pretty good art and coherent plots, she can tell herself that she's interested in more than the raw sex. If she was actually a young teen, she could be a fan of boy bands or something - that's the standard safe outlet for 14-year-olds - but because she's physically and intellectually more mature, she needs something more sophisticated.

I'm getting the impression that Zii has not been an entirely wholesome influence on young Ruby.

Honestly, I think that this is Ruby being herself. She's adapted to the unfamiliar situation that she's been dumped in, and discovered that she has a working libido, that she is actually serious about the business ambitions, and that yes, she is actually smart enough to work out how to push other people's buttons. Zii has given her a few pointers and probably saved her a couple of weeks of heart-searching and confusion, but I think that she'd have got here eventually on her own.

And she's even preserved a certain ethical code along the way. Yes, she's exploiting other people quite a lot - but she's mostly doing it by offering them what they want.

She was not an entirely wholesome influence on young Amber too.

Great idea these two are hatching, but I wonder if they have the money to pay for a booth. I do not know what Zii's disposable income is like and Ruby only recently started getting a paycheck.

That's kind of the definition of BL, it is made by women for women, the characters aren't meant to be realistic in any manner. It was a means to escape the very heteronormative standards of manga at the time, and it was always expected that the female audience would kind of identify with the male characters in a way in which they wouldn't have to confront feelings that would be considered taboo among women. In the meantime, shojo has evolved and you can see all types of interactions and sexuality portrayed in japanese media, so BL is kind of dying out in Japan (but kept strongly alive by foreign fans). BL was never about gay men - there's bara for that. There's a really sexy book about it.

(Fen is a bad academic because they've read so much about BL manga despite not having read a single one)

A booth at a smaller local comics show really shouldn't break the bank. I mean, if Ruby decided to fly off to San Diego or something she'd be nuts, but she's not stupid. I don't know exact figures, but I'd guess that those shows aim to make a lot of their money on door admission charges; the booths are there to pull the public in, so there's no point in over-charging.

And Ruby may be onto her second or third pay cheque by the time she has to cover the fee - and the first got her some nice new clothes. She'll need to pay for the product, too, of course, but, well... Worst case, we get a comedy loan application scene, or she maxes out a new credit card temporarily, or she persuades Dillon to put this on his PR budget.

Now, odds on Gary wandering past the booth, getting distracted by his friends and another oddly familiar face, and then having someone think he's into the yaoi?

It occurs to me that they might go halfsies with Jung on a booth, too.

Serious question: Are Comic cons in Montreal liberal enough to have Dylan all nekkid and oiled up a draw? I don't see that being as successful down here in Texas.

Of course, I was in Montreal a few months ago, and saw a happy looking male/make couple holding hands in the street. They were cute, as they were obviously in love, and it wasn't a big deal for anyone (me included). So it might fly up there.
