Thank you Ruby, for insulting everyone who has ever read anything remotely illustrated.

That's actually rather a sweet scene -- and another reminder that most of this cast are actually perfectly decent human beings when their hormones aren't running the show. (Note that the two people who've arguably behaved best to Ruby on first meeting are Matt and Zii.) And I seem to have called it right that someone who last saw Ruby about ten years ago would see her simply as someone who's grown up rather well.

(Mind you, I'm tempted to offer new phrasing for Zii in panel 2: "Yeahhh... I... know what you look like. You've grown up into a Giz character, and she lets you dress smart!")

Trivia point: I have the impression that Zii rather likes that hands-on-hips pose we get in panel 1, especially when she first meets someone. It's her "coolly appraising the rest of the world" posture, and cocking her hips like that is a way for an ultra-slim woman to project a bit of standard femininity.

Hey, be cool and hold back the geek paranoia. Ruby is in panic mode and trying to preserve the shell of her respectability, as usual, and she's stuck with a definition of respectability that went out of date two decades before she was born. We all know perfectly well that she doesn't actually believe what she just said herself -- and Zii hasn't bothered to feel insulted.

That did not goo too badly, but I await the other shoe to drop. Ruby already stumbled back into revealing her guilty pleasure without any real effort on Zii's part.

Hey, that went pretty well. (I admit it: I really, really, really want this encounter NOT to end with Ruby being--or feeling--humiliated...)

Oh, this conversation is going to get interestingly complicated, I'm sure. But Zii has no particular reason to be mean about it, unless Ruby's paranoia drives her to be unpleasant - and that's usually moderated by Ruby's formal politeness.

(Plus, cute kitten as lubricant, or glue, depending on your choice of metaphors.)

It would make a pleasant change, I agree -- but not an unprecedented one.

Ruby generally being so far out of her depth, and suffering so many humiliations, does tend to make her a bit paranoid -- but the fact is, most of the people around her aren't out to get her. Amber is just confused, Dillon tries to be nice when he remembers, Andy is a polite dim-bulb, and Matt was downright classy. I suspect that this encounter will show Ruby that Dillon isn't a fluke; people who aren't like her can still be okay really.

The question is, will Zii turn out friendly enough that Ruby can swear her to silence with Amber over the yaoi?

Ruby m'dear you really should try just admitting you like graphic novels...they're fun and some are really well written.

Of course, we could ship you a few very special titles to get started...

Well, at least she's found the perfect person who will understand her interest in Yaoi :)

I do wonder, though: From what I have seen, Zii is into it mostly for the erotic content, while Ruby seems to be into it more for the emotional attachment between the characters (which, as I understand it, is how most women in reality who like yaoi enjoy it).

They'll read the same books in slightly different ways, of course -- they're different people. But it's a subtle difference in shading, at most. Zii likes even her outright porn to have stories, and it's pretty clear that Ruby is more turned on by simple sexy sexiness than she wants to admit, so talking about the plots and emotions is likely to be partly an excuse with her. So they're probably converging on the same view from opposite directions.

Two things: Bravo on Zii for handling the meeting well (so far), and Ruby's reaction in the last panel :))

I'm hoping the situation continues to be more or less good, for Ruby's sake. It would be nice for her to have a girl she can talk to about, well anything really.

Figured put in 0.2 seconds. Considering Zii works there Ruby never really stood a chance. Now the question is could Zii do any better of a job than Dillian that it's not a big deal...

Ruby really is the world's worst liar; figuring her out is no great accomplishment. And I doubt that she's going to respect Zii's opinions much more than Dillon's... Still, this is still shaping up to be an interesting conversation.

I like the way that Ruby's lack of physical vanity also means that she's immune to false modesty. She knows that she's a fine young woman, but she doesn't care.
