C'm on Ruby, you can do it, even if what he's saying is strictly true ! You don't have to lie to comfort him.
Or let him cry like little children.
Didn't thought the reveal would have that effect on Dillon. Aww.

Ah, just Google it, Ruby sweetheart; as you of all people would expect, there's plenty of stuff about this silliness on the Web. Including on Oprah's own site. Then go and make breakfast while Dillon reads, if you want to feel virtuous without having to listen to him.
But I'm not sure why Ruby is having so much trouble in the last frame there. I know she's not the most tactile of people, but she doesn't usually seem to be downright phobic about physical contact; when Dillon has blubbered all over her in the past, she's usually seemed irritated rather than actually terrified. I do get that her innate truthfulness is causing her problems, of course.
And the other problem here is the fact that Dillon has cried wolf so often in the past. It shows Ruby as a nice person that she still dislikes seeing him cry, sure, but it's getting to the stage where she just looks gullible.

Re: 09-09-14 You were played for a fool
I think the reason she is shaking in the last panel is she is fighting the snarky part of her. Her deflating that fluffy cloud that Dillon was resting on has turned him in to a blubbering fool. That snarky side of her wants to pile on.
I think at the least she doesn't want to agree with the last sentence and make things worse. Looking at that last panel, it will be a hard battle to keep her sharper comments back.

You know I think these 2 are good for each other because they can see things the other cannot. As level headed as Ruby is she can be played too. Most recently when Angel sold her on a lot of pet care accessories because he played on her soft spot for having a cute pet and now we can see how Nathan as well as others have been deceiving Dillon for years by playing on his ego.
While he does need to hear this perhaps she could remind him that he is astute enough to spot certain things that she didn't.

I agree, Ruby has grown a lot in the first book and now it looks like she will repay the favor. I'm sure she will find a softer way to do it eventually, but she is helping Dillon see things he can't/wont.

Re: 09-09-14 You were played for a fool
That's possible, I guess, although she really hasn't been very snarky in the past. I keep wishing for her to go for the throat, with Dillon , Amber, and Andy, and she so rarely does; she just gets irritable with Amber and very occasionally points out Dillon's stupidities.FlashD81 wrote:I think the reason she is shaking in the last panel is she is fighting the snarky part of her.
(That said, it might not be her own snarkiness she's fighting so much as her own truthfulness. That's definitely a big part of her.)
I'm now wondering how phobic she is supposed to be about physical contact - maybe specifically physical contact with men. It doesn't really make sense, in that she not only puts up with Amber draping herself all over the bed, she accepted the kiss from Andy without screaming and dreams about more, and she puts up with Dillon being touchy-feely a lot. But every time he hugs her, she starts sweating bullets, and now we're getting this.
I'm hoping I'm wrong; we've had a good enough explanation of Ruby's attitude to sex, we don't need an extra twist to turn it into a comedy phobia, especially not an arbitrarily incomplete one. But those sweat-beads may have been meant as some kind of hint.

Re: 09-09-14 You were played for a fool
I think it could just be the awkwardness of the whole situation, especially if Ruby's never faced comforting people before. Some people (say Amber) would immediately go to a crying person to comfort them and give them a big hug and be perfectly fine, others try to do it without physical contact, and have to think a lot longer about what to say. I didn't read it as Ruby having a phobia, just her trying to psyche herself up to comfort Dillon, then simply backing out as Dillon's feelings escalate. She's just not comfortable comforting people

You'd need a microscope.
I kind of hope that Friday might see Ruby snapping and telling Dillon that, sorry, she really hates lying, she's done enough of it for her lifetime already, and yes he is an idiot. She might even make him realise that she's actually under worse stress than him right now. One day, he might even understand that he can't use everyone in his vicinity as a series of emotional crutches.
It's not going to happen, of course, but it's nice to dream.

I thought it wasn't any phobia about physical contact, Ruby just doesn't know how she can comfort Dillon without lying, because he has been basically everything he is saying he was.

I don't think it's the physical contact aspect that's giving her problems. She basically set the latest bout of awkward dramatics off so she feels responsible to an extent. That makes her default irked compassion worse. By the same token Ruby is worried that her responses could backfire and make things worse.

I think the issue in the last panel is that Ruby wants to comfort Dillon, but at the same time she can't disagree with what he's saying.
