Heh. If it was any other character who just broke up with their boyfriend and wanted another person's presence so they don't feel MORE awful sitting in a room alone sobbing to themselves...I don't think any of you would be anywhere close to this...venomous? Full of hatred? Those words are a bit too strong but I can't remember the word I want at the moment.

I think at some point I'm going to have to stop reading the forums when Ruby and Dillon are in the same strip as it seems to repeat "White Knight poor delicate Ruby! SEETHING DISLIKE FOR THAT AWFUL TERRIBLE DILLON WHO DESERVES EVERYTHING BAD" *shakes head*

Also at your last post Spidrift, I think it would take much much more to turn Ruby into a ruthless cynical person; her personality is still empathatical and she wants to do the right thing.

Oh no I dislike both (Ruby is more annoying than anything really)

but if the other hypothetical character boasted like Dillon? Yep, I'd be just as venomous to them

Well, you have to remember three things:
1) The break-up situation is ENTIRELY Dillon's fault. That tends to erode sympathy.
2) Dillon's a drama queen who, as we've seen more than once, turns the waterworks on and off at will to manipulate people. I linked to "The Boy Who Cried Wolf" earlier for a reason. (Hell, he went from blubbering on "Rudy"'s shoulder to flirtily joking with him in two minutes flat. If he'd REALLY been crying, when Jerzy came back to patch things up he wouldn't have seen him seemingly over him already.)
3) Dillon's a lousy, paranoid, boastful, cheating bastich of a stalker without a gram of self-awareness in his body. That REALLY tends to erode sympathy...

Well that is one way to end the book. While I agree Ruby looks good with the hair down I think she still would look good with glasses on. Something like what Lucretia has here, would help. :ymblushing:

The hate for Dillon is gone from me now. He needs help in seeing that the world is not all centered around him. Ruby might do that one day but she needs to grow as well. He needs to face his issues in a new light because of how he is presented is not letting me feel sympathetic toward him.

*prediction* What I see happening is as Ruby grows she will be less inclined to deal with the BS Dillon brings up. This will either force him to face his issues or try new tactics to get her to bend to his view. Most likely she will bend to his will for the sake of comedy, but I hope that she will brush him of at least once or twice and show growth on her part.

It doesn't help that (a) Dillon just revealed himself to Ruby as a hypocritical jerk, so imposing himself on her like this makes her look like a bloody saint by comparison, (b) Dillon talked his way into Ruby's bed by claiming that she "wouldn't notice he was there", then burst into loud tears, making him look like a manipulative liar, and (c) Ruby hasn't been getting much sleep recently as it is, so Dillon is hosing her especially badly.

One could also point out that Amber - Dillon's female friend who actually loves him like a sister - happily absented herself from the apartment when she saw that he'd just broken up with someone, because she knows that he'll be wailing loudly all night. In other words, even someone who likes Dillon thinks he's a bit much at times like this and can't be arsed to give him any sympathy.

(Note that Amber thereby hosed Ruby. Thanks, big sister.)

Almost certainly. Ruby keeps getting written as both a good person and the comic's butt monkey, and I don't really think that will change soon. (Yes, I know that the last Ma3-universe character who was written as a "butt monkey" got over it eventually. It took a while, though. "Piss on Ruby" is probably a joke with legs yet.) I'm just amused by the thought that, if Ruby is supposed to be learning from her experiences, the lesson she ought logically to be learning is "People are scum, don't waste your sympathy on them".

On which subject, by the way - Ruby has had one big thing she needed given to her; the place to stay, thanks to Amber. However, Amber didn't offer that; Ruby just turned up and demanded it. That was presumptuous of her, to be sure, and it got her some flack on the boards at the time. However, funnily enough, it worked. What conclusion can she draw? "If you need something, there's no point in expecting people to be nice about it; you have to go out and take it..."

I wish that I could believe that Ruby's last thought was a resolution, rather than just a punchline.

As I said, if Ruby ever masters the BDSM Librarian look (as Lucretia is working on, complete with the right glasses), she'll leave a swathe of submissive men in her wake, possibly to her confusion. If she combines that with a decent dose of cynicism, she could become quite dangerous.

I don't think Dillon deserves everything bad, but this strip is painful for me to read. I am a lot like Dillon, in that I tend to just plain miss social cues, but seeing Ruby's reaction to what is to him a minor request makes me feel guilty and sad.

I don't want her to become hardened and cynical, and I don't think that's the primary lesson Ruby should learn from this. But, whatever Dillon's needs are, her reaction shows she's no Gary, and is a lot less comfortable with that level of physical intimacy. Unlike judging Dillon's love life, I would be perfectly eager to see her telling him to back off and respect her boundaries a little more.

Oh, Dillon! How much more you would cry if you found out what your roommate and your fantasy boyfriend were doing right now! :p

I'm not even sure Gary and Amber are going to get it together with all those porn actresses barging in on their private time, and watching Gary have sex with a bunch of anonymous strangers may not have the same effect...

Plus, some of us have a soft spot for girls who wear glasses.
I've always had a soft spot for them, but I try not to discriminate.

Gary is the actual subject of Dillon's fixation. Knowing that he's lost forever to rampant heterosexuality might well sting a bit. Adding Amber to the mix would just add a spice of betrayal; and knowing that she approved and encouraged it might suffice for that purpose.

Minor correction: what Amber said was "Dillon wants to be alone, but I hate listening to him cry in the next room." That was a direct result of this exchange, not something Amber pulled out of her ass just as an excuse to avoid him and/or sleep with Gary. Although I think it's safe to say that once she was well and truly absolved from friend-duties, she gave her unselfish side the night off. She wasn't expecting Dillon to turn around and start craving company again, and neither was he. (As Dillon's lapses in self-awareness go, I think that's a fairly minor one.)
