And suddenly Ruby's choice of t-shirt looks a lot more significant.
Poor kid. Adaptable enough, but panic-prone. Given that there's no way she can be maintaining the Christian Bale-as-Batman voice at this point, I'd have thought that either Matt is going to see through her disguise real soon now, or he's going to see her as an insecure teenage kid just coming to terms with his sexuality. Either way, I suspect that he'll be nice about it, in a slightly patronising way - that's his style.
Which in turn makes me think that the countdown to Dillon going all weird about Ruby associating with Matt may have started.
(And will Ruby ever get a chance to use the cubicle?)

Downnnn the rabbit hole we go.
Matt already has that suave smile that probably means he has caught on.

I'm sure that he's caught on to something, but I won't assume what just yet. It may well be that he's twigged that he's got a Sweet Polly Oliver here ("Aren't you going to get yours out?"), but he may just think that he's talking to a confused teenage boy who's conflicted about his sexuality - which would probably send Matt all amiably patronising.

Probably, but after the last panel I wish Matt would introduce Rudy who's not gay to Sonya who is not a lesbian, but I don't think he's ever met her so that probably won't happen.Spidrift wrote:And suddenly Ruby's choice of t-shirt looks a lot more significant.

Matt is probably wary enough to tell when a man is disguised as a woman and vice versa. The only reason we don't know about Angel is the choker covers up potentially an Adam's Apple. If lack of that and a voice that's probably not fooling anyone isn't enough to tip off Matt then he's probably gotten a peak at Rudy's underwear as he "he" pretends to use the urinal and I doubt "Ruby" would go so far as to put on men's underwear just to complete her disguise.

Re: 09-05-14 I am still staring at it
Matt has met Sonya, but only in a set of print volume bonus strips, I believe. However, those strips are canon.
And if Matt can tell plain female briefs from plain male briefs at a brief glimpse through a half-open fly, I will go put a hat on, just so I can take it off to him for his hawk-like vision. (One bets that Ruby wears plain cotton, not lace and frills.) The lack of filling-out of said briefs might be more of a clue - but really, it's got to be the voice that's giving her away. The fact that she hasn't yet got anything out, and won't do so, should then corroborate the guess.
(Edit: Oops, past evidence suggests patterned but not frilly... And why am I suddenly fixating on Ruby's underwear?)
(Edit 2: Major bonus points to Matt if he tells Rudy that he's a girl, and a girl with as much talent for disguise as a giraffe in dark glasses trying to get into a "Polar bears only" golf club.)

Re: 09-05-14 I am still staring at it
I have tears in my eyes I'm laughing so hard! It's good thing nobody was around because I'd have to explain and possibly kill my good mood.
If Matt hasn't figured out that he is really a she, I'm sure he will soon. I'm sure she does fine in her element but Ruby is so far out of her depth here.
I think it might do her some good to just drop the act here and explain to Matt what is going on. It could still be funny seeing his reaction to it.

If you want a comparable character in Giz's oeuvre, try Tiff Winters. Over-specialised, virginal, a little deluded, frequently way out of her depth - but also determined and surprisingly adaptable, and therefore possibly dangerous to underestimate.FlashD81 wrote:If Matt hasn't figured out that he is really a she, I'm sure he will soon. Matt's kind of cool about stuff like that; he'd probably just give her some tips about making her act better. The fun would start if she happened to mention Dillon's name.FlashD81 wrote:I think it might do her some good to just drop the act here and explain to Matt what is going on. The dropping of Dillon's name is what I was going for. If Matt were to learn the whole situation I wonder what his reaction would be.

Re: 09-05-14 I am still staring at it
To be honest, I think that Matt mostly wants Dillon to be history at this point. There's maybe still some latent sexual tension between them, but unlike Dillon, Matt isn't prone to yearning flashbacks.
However, Matt might say something like "Dillon? Dillon O'Brien? Oh dear. Poor you." And I'd love to see these two then comparing notes on the subject. It'd probably help Ruby's sanity if she knew that she wasn't the only person who found Dillon a bit much despite his sort-of-charm.
