Ruby's problem is she takes good news and turns it into bad news. She should just relax and feel proud people think she's popular.

But that's not the sort of popular she wants. She has her pride, and she's easily embarrassed.
Sure, a less stressed woman could ride this out. But Ruby doesn't want to live with a false image. There's a kind of honesty in there.

I agree, and I find Ruby's honesty her most appealing character trait. She's not always right in what she thinks is true, but she always tells the truth as she sees it. She can't abide falsehood.
And ... I'm a sucker for red heads and would find reasons to like Ruby - sue me.
