Especially if one of them has to grow up with the parents presenting the older sibling as a shining paragon of virtue and a role model to be emulated... when the younger sibling is quite aware that the supposed golden child has feet of clay.

A certain amount, uh, yes. Believe me, you don't need to tell me. (Remind me, maybe; one does get over that stuff eventually.) But Ruby's manner to Amber goes way beyond routine sisterly bickering. Perfectly understandably, of course; Amber did put her through seven years of hell.

A propos of the uselessness of Ruby's parents, does anyone remember they are wealthy doctors ? I was browsing the Mà3 archives and stepped upon Gary fantasizing about Amber's pennyless childhood and Zii quipping this piece of backstory to Dillon. Here's the strip.

This could maybe explain their poor job as parents, given it can easily be taken as "always working parents who won't/can't take some time to raise their children". Ruby can even possibly be born after they became rich, while Amber was born when they were less busy, explaining some possible differences in attention.

What strikes is also how unaware Gary is of the ways of the porn industry. #-o

I hadn't forgotten the Larose parents' supposed jobs. It just makes me think that they should be too intelligent to make such a Horlicks of their daughters' upbringings, but smart people can be very stupid sometimes. I also tend to assume that doctors should be relatively hard to shock - after a few years, they've seen and heard it all - but that's probably more wild-eyed optimism on my part.

To be honest, though, I'm never sure how seriously to take family-related backstory from early Ma3 strips. Giz and Dave may not be entirely immune to making stuff up that sounds good at the time, dropping it in, then forgetting about it if it doesn't actually arise in the story after that first mention. I don't really take Gary's "religious upbringing" story very seriously these days, either.

As to Gary - he's an idiot romantic, emphasis on the "idiot".

Do doctors tend to do as well in Canada as in the US? (And are there the same lean, overworked early years?)
