Question is, even if she were a porn star, who the hell would give a cock-ring as a first date gift? Especially since she doesn't HAVE a ... well... the equipment to use it. I'm sure it would be in poor taste IRL no matter what your occupation.

Deeply poor taste. But hey, Ma3 universe characters. Anyway, the whole thing was probably just Gina's scheme to cop a quick feel or assuage her curiosity about her gorgeous but hopelessly clueless colleague.

Hmm, so it's not just Dillon, that entire social circle is conspiring to break Ruby (intentionally or not, it's all the same). I may revise that theory if she never learns about the cock ring, but the opportunity to make her freak out yet again may be too good for the creative team to miss.

That idiot actually did that... >_< He really did it. WHY does his caretaker allow him out of the house unsupervised?

Hmm. No. No, I don't think so. Sonya is willfully dumb, the better to generate drama. This guy just seems to be extremely clueless...

Yeah. It's ... mostly a very different sort of dumb. Sonya seems to have an adequate theoretical grasp of how the world works, but she doesn't pay enough attention to her surroundings, and she rushes into things, being more confident than she should be. Andy is clueless; he doesn't grasp how the world works, so the fact that he pays attention to his surroundings doesn't help him, and he seems to lack much self-confidence outside of his areas of proven competence (e.g. his job).

They're both hideously gullible, but with Sonya that's because people can fast-talk her into anything (inattentive and impetuous), while Andy just doesn't understand what's being pulled on him (clueless). Sonya needs to learn to slow down and pay attention; Andy needs some hard experience or similar.

By the way, I suspect that Ruby and Andy may be meant to seem cute together. The problem I have with that is that neither would have enough of a grasp of how to make a relationship work. Bringing them together looks like a recipe for a series of misunderstandings and screw-ups. Yeesh, they make Marigold and Dale over in Questionable Content look like a mature couple.

In what sense? That's a meaningless question unless you make it clearer.

Ruby is "the female Gary" in that she's starting the story as a virgin, sharing an apartment with two of the comic's lead protagonists. Her psychology is different in some crucial ways, but she seems to share a certain amount of plot function with Gary. Andy isn't one of the three core protagonists, doesn't seem to be particularly promiscuous, lacks DiDi's surface self-confidence, and while he's good-looking, doesn't have DiDi's mind-controlling effect on passers-by. So no, he doesn't seem to be "the male DiDi" in that sense. Also, he's a clear potential romantic interest for "the female Gary", whereas the original Gary/DiDi relationship was more complicated than that.

He's wildly naive and clueless and a bit confused, while being sexually attractive, which is a bit like DiDi, but frankly most of the cast in these linked comics are more or less clueless, confused, and sexually attractive. So I don't see where the question is coming from.

By the way, all the nonsense about the ring has distracted us from the more important and much less predictable thing about this strip; Ruby is handling the date rather well. She's looking cutely nervous rather than scared, she took Andy's compliment just fine, she accepted his flowers with good grace, and she's chatting to him happily, with even a hint of flirtation. For someone who didn't even want to be here, she seems to be fitting in great.

And she certainly isn't being "the female Gary". Gary is a walking social disaster zone by comparison. Ruby is being downright likeable.

Well, at least Ruby doesn't think it's an engagement ring or something like that... :))

I tend to dismiss a lot of Ruby's mistakes on naivete and inexperience, but not this time. It's not that she doesn't realize it's a cock ring. I'd miss that too, but who would think a ring too big for any finger and too small for any wrist is a bracelet? I get the the farcical setup and joke in between, but seriously. Perhaps she thinks Andy is clueless in selecting jewelry sizes which I suppose is plausible. We are getting the ball rolling. Ruby is none the wiser and actually likes her gift without knowing what it really is and Andy thinks she prefers well endowed men.
Was referring to Andy, actually.

I can't really think of anyone who would appreciate a sex toy as a present on a first date.

The amount of hate, or at least disdain for the clueless, dense, and duped characters in this comic is too damn high! It makes me realize that if a character in these comics were based on me, I would be receiving quite a bit of it. Since there was a period of my life where I might have fallen (albeit begrudgingly) to the same lie that tricked the poor guy into his poor choice of gifts. Also the dense blogger guy could be me from any period in my life (which unfortunately I think includes the present), since I am apparently oblivious to whether or not a woman is attracted to me.

Humans are not perfect, people! We make mistakes and bad judgements calls. I like that the authors working out the scripts for these comics keeps that in mind. Makes a much more entertaining and realistic (as far as comics go) element.

With that of little rant out of the way, keep up the good work! :-bd
