Business degree; potentially good for employment prospects. But: Economic recession; not so good. Really rather crap people skills; not good at all. It's not hard to imagine just how badly some of those interviews will go.

Never mind all the stuff about sex - that's her personal business. What sharing an apartment with a couple of people who aren't her sort of people at all might just do for Ruby is smooth off the rough edges that she needs to lose to have any sort of life at all. (And I still don't know how she got through a full university course with that much attitude.)
and then, when all else fails, her sister can come to the rescue and pull some strings to get her a job in 'the industry' so that hilarity can ensue properly.

Amber has no sense of physical space :3

ofcourse this isnt true for all porn stars, it probably doesnt have anything to do with pornstars

but someone like Amber who becomes a porn star? yep. no concept of physical space.

I could see things going that way although I'm somewhat mixed on that. I'd be lying if I said there wasn't some appeal to it, but it's a little cliche. Maybe Amber will pull some strings and make it very clear Ruby is only to have a desk job. Her associates oblige her, but Ruby might begin to think the only reason she hasn't been asked to do porn is because she's not pretty enough which would provide loads of insecurity related humor.

i was thinking something along the lines of a production assistant; put her on set & force her to deal with all that 'icky' sex stuff, without actually having to do any of it.

though an accounting position or something like that could be funny too. just imagine ruby working out the production budget on 'Backdoor Bounty-Hunter 17", using her financial sense to cut their lube budget by 22%, getting a bulk discount on silicone implants, etc.

Their construction or their existence?

(She seems to favour that general style, but she was wearing a skimpier top and shorts the night Gary dropped by. Evidently the weather is getting cooler.)

I really can't see Ruby, as she's been depicted so far, being able to handle even that, at all. It's only pride and a determination not to show weakness that's keeping her in Amber's apartment - see today's strip. Working in a sleazy industry like that would be a blow to anyone's pride if they'd hoped for better; with her phobias, I think she'd sooner head home in shame and admit defeat. Remember, she can't really handle the sight of naked men, which would be hard to avoid there. Plus, it'd involve doubling up on the need to lie to their parents, which has cost her quite enough already. And Amber should have more sense than to push the idea, given that a shamed and demoralised Ruby who went home might well let a few facts slip that Amber still wants kept secret.

I can just about believe what someone previously suggested - Ruby getting involved in the legitimate film industry through Amber and Dillon, possibly starting when she sees their contracts and tells them how dumb they were to sign that.

But if the local economy's bad enough that Ruby has no choice but to take whatever she can get, well she may have to just suck it up and deal with the...job conditions. :ymdevil:

"She can always go home in shame" you may reply. I reply in turn "Who says her parents will LET her come back home?" I speculate her parents may have employed some serious tough love to get her out of their house, at the very least by making things so unpleasant for her she felt she HAD to leave. She may not feel she CAN go back to her parents house anymore. Harsh? Sure, but if it gets a "failure to launch"-type adult child out of the parents' home, then Mission Accomplished.

uptight & judgmental character being forced way way way outside her comfort zone, surviving in an environment where she doesn't fit in, and getting to know people she usually wouldn't give the time of day?

sounds like comedy to me.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who's mentioned LaRose's sleeping position looks... awkward.

It's cute (to me) though, that all Ruby thinks about with regards to the perks of a steady income is twin beds, rather than moving out. ^^

I wouldn't be surprised if they were glad to get her out of their hair, and were ruthlessly happy to dump her on Amber. But this ups the ante if Ruby feels that she has no choice but to head home.

- "Why would you come home when you could stay with your sister in the city?"
- "I never wanted to tell you this, but... Do you know what Amber was doing for a living all those years? Do you know what sort of person you're asking me to live with? And do you know what she wants me to do for a living now?"

Not if it destroys all plausibility with a character who's been established in some detail over multiple previous episodes.

I've seen weirder. Especially in comedy.

Trying to get to sleep, physically uncomfortable, had an incredibly bad day. It plays merry hell with priorities. I'm sure that she'll get a clearer idea of these things in the morning (if she gets any sleep before then).

It just doesn't look as if she's lying down. More like she's dancing on one leg...

how does that destroy all plausibility? she's sexually repressed, not genophobic

Okay, the art's a little odd there.
'J' wrote:how does that destroy all plausibility? she's sexually repressed, not genophobic
Her reactions while in the closet looked pretty phobic to me. At minimum, her repression makes her actively disgusted by sexuality. And she has particular reasons to hate the porn business.

I can't see any way in a million years that she'd go along with that idea.

cognative dissonance; her behavior (looking at naked bodies, wanting to look at naked bodies, possibly being aroused by looking at naked bodies) was at odds with her self-image (serious, anti-sex businesswoman). this generates stress and anxiety in the subject, motivating them to reduce dissonance by altering either the behavior or the self-image.

the simplest way would be pride. pride will push a person beyond every limit they ever imagined they had.

if the only alternative is to go home as an admitted failure, then she will do what she has to do and endure what she has to endure in order to avoid that fate. any dissonance that comes from making such compromises can be rationalized away, since 'it's only temporary', 'it's really just a desk job like any other', etc.
