And more importantly: if the wolf-creature is a stand-in for Lilian -as it seems now to be the case- what does this tell us about her old life? And I'm thinking especially about the bit where she complains that "rescued princesses" no longer wish for her "warm embrace"

I dunno. Lillian seems rather introverted for the most part. It seems to me like she's been coming out of her shell only recently.
Early to rise and early to bed makes a man healthy and wealthy but socially dead.
