Hmmm... and the pillar becomes a tree... and as such, far more complex...

Hm.
There's some symbolism floating around here, but dense as I am, I cannot figure it out.

Well I'd guess Lillian's pillar - straight, sterile, symmetrical, harmonious and dull in its self-contained perfection - is her own image of her life, her moods and minds and whatnot, and it growing into a sprawling, fertile, precariously leaning tree with many curling branches at the touch of the strangers is almost literally what she feels has happened since she met all these new people.
I wonder if she enjoys growing so much, or if she's worried she will break or topple. . .

this is definately one of the most beautiful webcomics i've been following. for all sorts of reasons.
Affro Shaman of the Forum and Deranged Elder Lynx of the Caves. Perpetuater of warm-hearted irrelevance and lynx kitteh of affectionate inflictions.

There's definitely some significance to that tree. What it is, I have no clue. My guess is that Jenny Creed's speculation will turn out to be a fairly accurate guess.
