Would you be referring to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, kind sir??midgetshrimp wrote:I want to see TSO again, but I don't think it's gonna happen this year. Definitely next year. That show was awesome the last time I saw it (November 2006, less than a week before my knee surgery. Loved it. The concert, not the surgery...)
I have still not gotten around to listing to any of their music, but I've been a huge Savatage Fan since... about the moment Chriss Oliva died...

Yes, I would be referring to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, my good man. I had only heard one song (Carol of the Bells) before I went and saw them and I wasn't disappointed. The first half was kind of a rock opera thing, which was cool (if a little pretentious), but the second half was a lot more casual. It was in a hockey rink, and the lead man came out wearing the home jersey and talking up the crowd. They played some rockin tunes, did a unique version of "Layla", and jammed a bit. It was sweet. Still the only concert I've ever been to. I've been to some small venues, like local scene gigs, but this is the only capacity crowd show I've ever been a part of. The t-shirts are cool too.Don Alexander wrote:Would you be referring to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, kind sir??midgetshrimp wrote:I want to see TSO again, but I don't think it's gonna happen this year. Edit: I need to catch up to my brother. He went with me to that, but he also went to one of Metallica's Summer Sanitarium shows, he's seen Santana live, got to see Shadowsfall, went to Lalapalooza or Alternapalooza or one of those "palooza" shows, where he saw a bunch of good bands. And other stuff. Not fair.

Re: Let's talk about music!
He forgot to call my little sister when we celebrated her birthday at my dad's last weekend, after he was reminded that morning. And he didn't call on her birthday (today) either. Fortunately, she just turned 14, so the pizza we had for supper made her more than happy. I also got a message relayed through a family member that he wants to have my Sega Genesis console. Admittedly I don't ever play it, but that's only because I don't have working controllers for it. And they're really hard to find. I still think the hockey games for the Sega are the best I've ever played. Those and Road Rash. The graphics are just so cool.Don Alexander wrote::shock:midgetshrimp wrote:Still the only concert I've ever been to.

And seeing as I live in a rural town in the middle of a state most people outside of New England don't even know exist (as well as many within), I don't have such advantageous opportunities to hop from bop to bop, unfortunately. I do go to small local shows when I'm living on campus though, as I said before. Far from concert proportions, considering the floor space in the place is smaller than three of the rooms in my house.

Re: Let's talk about music!
...is it considered thread jacking or thread necromancy if you steer a thread back to the original topic? ...ah well, purely academic anyway... now, back on topic (the original one, i believe.. .could be wrong though, who cares)
while in my intro i mentioned being somewhat of a metal/hard rock fan, its not quite accurate (and was mentioned to hint at appearance more than anything)... i listen to almost every genre, if the song in question is worth my time but only rock and metal has any chance of finding its way in my cd collection (playing it a bit more loose with mp3/ogg) ...growing up with the classics (led zeppelin, queen, acdc, old metallica, iron maiden, steve vai, deep purple, just to name a few), its hard not to have a preference to rock and metal, especially since the latter is pretty close to classical music (and if you doubt that, just check Apocalyptica) ...if it has cello/violin and electric guitar... i'm generally sold
as for favourite bands? too many to list, but Iced Earth is definitely in my top5... and having seen Matt Barlow live, well... the guy has one hell of a voice, can't beat that

Re: Let's talk about music!
Before I turned 21 I was a metalhead. My collection consisted of a few Ozzy Osbourne cds, Type O Negative cds, 1 Led Zeppelin album (2 cds), 1 Black Sabbath cd, 1 Megadeth cd, and a few other metal albums I can't remember off the top of my head (I'd check my CD Book, but it's all the way at the top of my closet).
So from 17-25, I did a lot of downloading of music. A lot went on CD, and after 21 most of it consisted of Alternative, Grundge, Punk, and songs from Anime series. For a while I was heavily into The Pillows, a J-Pop band.
At 25 I discovered The New Pornographers on Pandora.com, an Indie Supergroup. Fell in love with them right away and started buying CDs again. I currently have all of their albums except for their live one (though I need to replace Mass Romantic and Twin Cinema as they got scratched to Hell), two Destroyer Albums, the FLCL Soundtrack, 1 Portastatic Album, 1 Atomic Numb3rs album, 1 golden Dogs album, and I used to have 1 Johnny Hollow album and 1 Kimberly Trip.

Agalloch is pretty good. I've only heard Ashes Against the Grain, though. Normally if I wanna listen to post rock I'm more likely to go for 65daysofstatic or Explosions In the Sky (I know, how obvious, right?) But that is nothin' against Agalloch, that is "what do I remember I have." >.>;
Dude, Jerr, New Pornographers are ace. X3 And so are The Pillows.

OK, my turn...because, y'know, I shouldn't be preparing slides for tomorrow's class, or anything like that.

Re: Let's talk about music!
Tilde, you have an amazingly awesome collection there. But: you have Stars on your list and they aren't asterisked?! I'm pretty certain that is musical blasphemy (not as bad as saying you hate The Beatles, though. My sister dated a guy once who said he hated The Beatles. The rest of the family was like "and you didn't break up with him right then?!")

My mother hates The Beatles. So I turn it up whenever they come on the radion.

SO!!! I just got back from "my" bands tour last night, and with me I brought back a love of a duo called The Wind Whistles. Their music is really pretty and topical, go check 'em out already!!

Before going to bed, I will just tell the world:
I just listened to Paysage D'Hiver's "Welt aus Eis". The utter brilliance of this piece of music stuns me again and again.
