Let's talk about music!

Post by MerchManDan » Mon Sep 08, 2008 5:48 am

As the Introductions thread had been hijacked by a comparison of musical tastes, I thought it apropriate to start a new thread devoted to audiophiles, and thier respective sonic obsessions.
Summary: Let's talk about music!
Combing through my CD library (burned onto my PC), I've found the following artists:
18 Rabbit
The Afterbeat
The Barrymores, Beck, Big Wreck, Bill Hicks (not music, but still entertaining), Butthole Surfers
Cake, The Cardigans, Chisel, Clock Strikes, Concrete Blonde, Crystal Castles
Danny Elfman
Eric's Alone, Everlast
The Farrell Brothers, Femme Generation, The Fiery Furnaces, Fiona Apple, Floor Thirteen, Folk Implosion, Foo Fighters
The Guess Who
HALO soundtrack, HCE
I Mother Earth, Inoke Errati
J.P. Hoe
KidGib
Lounge
MagnaTude Records sampler, Matthew Good Band, Matthew Sweet, The Multiple Partners Army
Neil Young, Nine Inch Nails
The Offspring, Old Harper
A Perfect Circle, Pere Ubu, The Perms, Peter Gabriel, Poe, Pure
Robert Berry, Rusty
Sam Roberts, Self-X, Shaye, Sortie Real, Spoon, The Sneaker Pimps, Soundgarden, Stone Temple Pilots, Subcity Dwellers, Sweetheart (or The Sweethearts)
Tim Butler, Trapt
Vav Jungle, Veruca Salt, Violent Femmes
Was Not Was, We Are Wolves, Weezer, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Wheat Monkeys, WinterSleep

...and I think there're more in my "Unknown Artist" folder.

Audiophile refers to those people who build their own, multi-thousand-dollar stereos so that they can listen to music to the fullest and only listen to music on vinyls and shit.

Anyway... Music, music...

You know what, I'll save time and link to my Last.fm profile. That'll be easier. Notice; I don't really listen to all the classical rock stuff in the top artists anymore, Pink Floyd, occatinally, Yes and Led Zeppelin, never anymore (though I could give The Yes Album a spin later on). Also, lots of it is finnish.

 Sorry about that - it just developed. After all, the Introductions thread has been very quiet lately...
MerchManDan wrote:Long list of stuff...
Err... Nope. I like Danny Elfman soundtracks, but that's about it. And I think I have even less in common with the taste of JohnnyWang. Well, each unto his or her own! ;)

I've posted mine own both in Introductions and Nerdy Vices, so if there's any other metalheads around except for Phoenix... Have at it!!

Hmmm, I don't seem to have much in common musically to the rest of y'all. TT^TT

I agree that lastfm is way easier than typing out a huge list, though. So here, lastfm: http://www.last.fm/user/elfmaiddryope

Yet another forum where I appear to be the only Residents fan. Currently I'm listening to P.J. Harvey and Poe, with some Wizardry 8 soundtrack mixed in for flavor. I've been trying to get ahold of the soundtracks to Along Came a Spider and The Hunt for Red October. I tend to listen to music for a while then drop it for a while - the Residents are a pretty solid constant in my life, though (I need to get Bunny Boy now).
Further affiant sayeth not.

I need to get my hands on some anime soundtracks. The soundtracks for Cowboy Bebop, Appleseed, Samurai Champloo, Wolf's Rain, and GitS are awesome. Must find.

Congratulations, Dryope!! I have absolutely NO IDEA what you are listening to there. I've never heard of any of these bands and can't place the style... Alternative Rock? Britpop??

W00t!! Hunt for Red October is great!! The "Hymn to Kransy Oktjabr" is stunning. Basil Poledouris rocks. R.I.P.

Do you know Sususmu Hirasawa's Paprika soundtrack?? (Or the movie, by the way.) Very wacky but fun. The Parade Theme is awesome.

>.> Well, there's lots of twee and ska. And then dance rock and country and everything else. I know you've heard of Britney Spears, though, c'mon. You can't say you don't recognize ANY of my top 15. Feel free to flee in horror now, I'm totally used to that reaction.

If, however, you wanted just a list of music owned rather than top stuff played:
http://mog.com/dryope
It's outdated now, though, because mog kills my computer everytime I try and run it. I am positive that this at least has artists you would recognize. ^_~ But in terms of what I listen to the most lastfm is more honest.

@Mr. Shrimp: And how much space do you have on your laptop?! Holy cow. I like most of your collection, however. I hereby deem you a man of excellent musical taste.

I have a Dell Latitude D630, with... 74.4 GB total in the C: drive, 37.8 GB free space. I got it for school. It's my medium between cds and my Creative Zen mp3 player, which I need to send in for repairs. Damn thing won't turn on or take a charge. I need to upgrade too, I'm running out of memory on it.

Do not have time to make an exhaustive list here at this time, it would probably take less space to list music I don't like. :P I can generally find something to like from almost any band or artist. Just off the top of my head though, in no particular order:

Rock, Metal, Punk, Folk, Filk, Celtic, Alt, C & W, some Blues, and I don't know what else.

Try animovies.com, RightStufInternational, Robert's Corner Store, or maybe even J-List. You should be able to find what you need or want.

My brother and I have a friend named Josh Turner. He's about 6' 7" and uses his spider hands to play some badass slap-bass. He's cool. Your Josh Turner's a tool. :P

That is awesome.
How is "my" Josh Turner a tool?
He doesn't seem like he would be the nicest person in real life, come to think of it.
But I like his music.
