The Springboard

Post by JVDifferent »

I've noticed that there are quite a few forumites out there who have some stories, works-in-progress and the like. The kind of works-in-progress that they've been pouring their heart and soul into for years on end. However, works-in-progress of that nature tend to be not quite polished enough to post in the Bards' Corner. So I thought a new thread for it would be kind of cool.

Anyway, the Springboard is a friendly place to rebound fiction related-ideas off fellow story-tellers. The fiction need not be that one novel in you that you've always wanted to write- it could be a painting you plan to do, a video game you wish to design one day, a character you're not quite sure about, a film synopsis you haven't pitched yet. Pretty much any kind of idea for a story you want to tell, you can post it here, and receive some constructive criticism.

Emphasis on the constructive. Works-in-progress are sensitive things. Play nice, but don't sugarcoat. :)

(P.S Mods tell me if this thread is okay!!)

Hooray! It's okay! I don't expect it to be the most page-munching of threads, but still. Anyway, I'll go first!

I've been working on a pretty epic modern fantasy/sci fi type narrative for a very long time now (since I was sixteen!). It has changed a lot since I started it, but some fundamental elements have always been the same. The angry-looking insectoid dragon I posted in the Art Thread, Serranuesseth, is a rather pivotal character in it. He has a fair epic backstory, but I thought that maybe I'd divulge some of my setting before I went into something as epic as that.

My narrative, a set of graphic novels that together I've named Vision, is set across two planets and three universes. We've got Earth in its own universe, Uoera, and Dresis. Uoera is a planet very similar to Earth- in fact, if the multiverse were a set of celluloids stacked upon each other, (to use a metaphor from His Dark Materials), Uoera and Earth would overlap. They share the same 'slot' in their respective universes. The major differences are that Uoera never experienced the KT Extinction Event (the whatever-it-was that killed the dinosaurs), developed intelligent life a lot earlier, and has a subtle kind of magic instead of Earth's scientific energy.

Thanks to a giant cataclysmic event (I can go into that later), Uoera's original intelligent species has been completely wiped out, and there's a giant, angry hole in its reality-fabric that (of course!) leaks into Earth's. Earthern humans can cross over into Uoera, and the survivors of the cataclysm (slave-species that the original intelligent species bred) can cross over into Earth- however the Uoera --> Earth cross over is significantly easier. Hence Earth as a whole doesn't really know about Uoera, yet Earth's existence is common knowledge to Uoerans, given the rip in their planet's reality. The surviving Uoerans have kind of leant on ideas, technologies and social frameworks learnt from Earth in order to survive- so things are similar... but rather different too.

Dresis is a crazily chaotic universe of its own, where all organisms evolve on a cellular level instead of an individual one. Individual level: if the organism sucks, the organism dies and doesn't pass on its genetic material. Cellular level: if a cell, type of cell or group of cells suck, then they die off, giving the organism some space within its own architecture to mutate. So if not killed outright, creatures from Dresis constantly evolve, and have to constantly evolve in order to compete with their rivals. In Vision, the dragons on Uoera are actually an introduced species from Dresis. No one really knows how they got there- in fact, Uoerans don't even know that Dresis even exists. They're just a mystery with an incredible biological advantage.

Anyway, that's enough for now! Interesting? Not? Confusing? Let me know!

I don't know if I'm smart enough to make it through it, but I would certainly like to! It sounds terribly interesting.

So wait, intelligent dinosaurs or no? If no, then i think you can do good with that setting and premise. I like the idea that it's still regular old earth, but an entire new planet is there to discover/explore. I really like stories with a parallel universe type thing going on. If there are intelligent dinosaurs, fill out a regular sized novel, maybe 200-300 pages. The plot and characters can all suck. But if it has dinosaur society and dinosaurs with lasers, I'll buy five!

Basically this:

...or you could keep up with what you had in mind. I support that as well.

Uoera indeed has dinosaurs! :D Or at least what I imagine dinosaurs would have evolved into after all those millions of years of not being extinct. There's also a lot of crocodylian-based animals, birds, and invertebrates. Mammals, however, are a purely Earthern phenomena. Uoera used to have quasi-mammals, but they got wiped out with the cataclysm that killed off the original intelligent species (the Kes'sah).

And yes, there is a species of intelligent dinosaurs! They were one of the slave species the Kes'sah bred for menial tasks- however the Kes'sah's definition of menial was actually quite complex, as they were stupidly advanced and intelligent back in their day. They look very much like a humanoid Carnotaurus. I'll have to post a picture up of one sometime soon!

This part kind of...stops me dead.

If the cross from that universe is easier, WE should know more about them - they'll stumble in, but not be able to get back, and so on; whereas the few of us who stumble through and have an easy time getting back.
I swear I will, I'll make you smile.

Original fiction by Neko: Heroes of Angel City (now in convenient (and edited) ebook form!). Kuchisake.

Ah yes. Crossing over. I should probably explain that.

The rip in Uoera's reality, known as the Great Rift, is a really, really angry, chaotic swirling vortex of a thing. So angry, in fact, that it chews up the magical force type stuff the planet is essentially made of (in the same way people are made of chemical energy and matter, that is). Being near this place means being near a lot of broken magic, to use a simpler term for it. And broken magic is pretty bad for native Uoerans- they either fall drastically ill, mutate (in a cancer-type of way, that is) or just plain die if exposed to too much. So they learnt rather quickly to stay away, back in the day. Humans, and all Earthern wildlife, are immune to this effect. It's broken and glitchy magic, not energy. Humans filtering in through the Great Rift only have to endure the chaotic weather conditions, and the barren landscape of the surrounding area. Oh, and the insane, mutated organisms that have somehow adapted to that unforgiving kind of habitat. Uoerans would have to endure the whole lot and stuff that attacks their very essence. And yes, the mere existence of the rip has been causing the planet some serious environmental problems from the get go. Just in case you were wondering.

Also, the Great Rift is kind of... octopus shaped. There's the giant 'head' of the hole set firmly on Uoera's side of the rip, and the 'tentacles' that lash out all over Earth's surface. Technically, it would be easier for an Uoeran to jump through the head and out a tentacle- but alas the broken magic makes it inadvisable/deadly. People (and other things) on Earth can get yoinked off the surface of their planet and thrown through to the other side of the Great Rift. If they survive and make it to civilization, chances are they won't want to risk going back, given that the natives won't help them. Because they're clever and don't want to die.

At the beginning of the narrative, the Uoerans have of course developed safe travel through the Great Rift, with the help of introduced Earthern materials and technology. It was very expensive and dangerous *nods*. Uoeran magic has also developed all sorts of disguising methods, allowing them to finally sneak onto Earth without us crazy humans knowing a thing. This is where the fun starts. ;)
