No one’s mentioned The Princess Bride? OK, I’m adding The Princess Bride.
Yes, a lot of stuff was cut from the book to the movie, and other parts were rewritten, but it was cut and rewritten by the original author, William Goldman, who also knew how to write screenplays. He always thought he’d be remembered for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but for me, I’ll remember him for The Princess Bride—both the book and the movie.
What was cut was more than made up with the brilliant casting: André René Roussimoff (Andre the Giant) was born to play Fezzik; everything before in his life was prelude. Billy Crystal as Miracle Max? “Marvelous. Absolutely marvelous.” Peter Falk as the grandfather (father in the book).
Best book to movie adaption.
