Pets: Friends & Masters

Post by Don Alexander » Sun Nov 09, 2008 8:17 am

Recently, our own esteemed Ninja Kitty Minion peppercat posted a picture of her cat, creating mass headsplorts. In the Picture Thread, Nathan Dorian has graced us with his tom-with-a-gay-name Honey, Fen posed with a little tigger, and let's not forget thaldin's malamute ball of fluff for all caninely inclined or MerchManDan's rat.

Further esteemed forumites have mentioned being in the possession of cats and other assorted eukaryotes.

So, similar to the Picture Thread, with a spicing of discussion and tips (e.g. correct care of Elder Cave Kodiak Bear Guards), I open the Pets 'n' Animals thread.

Pics may be serious or cute. Or anything inbetween, beyond and orthogonal.

I shall begin with a not-so-good (have no better ones right now) picture of my parents "new" cat.

Image

It is nameless but is called "Kitty Bugger".

I grew up with cats, the last passed 12 years ago. My mom was always conflicted, wanted another cat but didn't really want the cat hairs, the claws in the wallpaper etc. Then one day, a little kitten, perhaps two months old, began wandering our neighbourhood. Very shy, emaciated and clearly abused. Not only do we suspect a truly evil person (not the Dirty & Evil style of "evil") beat her and set her out, we also think she was separated from her mother too early... Anyway, my mom started buying cat food. El Cheapo stuff, and dry. Kitty Bugger still loved it and was not Miss Prissy about it.

Ever so slowly, my parents gained the cat's trust. First a bowl of food outside, close door and stay away from the glass. To put bowl on doorstep, leave door open, to put bowl in kitchen, etc. After claiming our house as its domain, step two was to get it accustomed to its minions - who have more to offer than food.

Well, after many tentative steps, Kitty Bugger, now complacent, fat, non-wallpaper-scratching and several years old, loves to roam the house, eat spiders (especially big brown hairy ones! ), lie in front of a roaring fire, purr like a Rolls-Royce to me over the telephone, and snuggle up on my parents' laps when they watch DVDs or do translations.

Kitty Bugger is a bit stupid, I must say, our old mom cat Frischling was Brainiac in comparison, but it's a lovable little fluffball, and it found a good home.

I hope you also have wonderful pictures and stories to share of cats, dogs, bunnies, gerbils, parakeets, goldfish, tarantulas, pythons, Shoggoths and Frumious Bandersnatch.

Edit: Whoops, fixed a pronoun...

I have a pet rat, named Friday. he is quite adorable, but doesn't get played with nearly enough.

(Apologies for the poor quality phoos. I don't actually know where my camera is, so I had to take them with my phone)

And this is Horace. A bird that we saved from the side of the road a few weeks ago. We think he got hit by a car. Poor 'ting.

Kitty Bugger, hee hee, I like that one.
I've always wanted a pet rat! I'll get one some day, I promise. :|
I think you've got a lorikeet there, Asaryu. What are you feeding it with?

Muki here, my mom says he's the luckiest cat ever. A girl found a day-old litter in a plastic bag among the garbage (A curse on whomever left them there ). She took it to my uni (naturally, what a better place to find someone to take care of them, but a building full of veterinarians-to-be?) and another guy and me took them in. I bottle-fed him and carried him around in a backpack filled with towels and warm water bags for two weeks until he opened his eyes and started eating on his own. I felt like a kangaroo :D
He used to fit in the palm of my hand. Now he's huge. Most people told me he wasn't gonna make it, but HA!! Here he is! In all his furry, slightly-obese, spoiled-rotten gorgeousness.

And these are Kari & Heidi!

8 year-old schnauzers. One day, my dad went out to get me and my bro a puppy. He came back with two.
Mom: TWO?! Are you insane?! Why did you get another one?
Dad: Weeell... they were both so cute and they were the last ones... one of them was gonna stay all alone!
Mom: ... (¬_¬)

I'm so glad he did get them both :D

Yeah, Horace was a Rainbow Lorikeet.

We took him to the vet as soon as i got him home and warm and out of the rain. The vet was only a 2 minute walk from my house, so we went there as soon as we could.

Which reminds me. We have two Rainbow Lorikeets that sit on our windowsill and beg us for food. We don't know what to feed them, so we don't, but they come back all the time anyway. Sometimes they come to the kitchen window just to say hello while we wash up. It's all quite adorable.

We call them Chubba 1 and Chubba 2. :D

Because... *Gary-sniffle* I have no one else to spoil.... And I like to spoil.

But, yeah, I should stop. By, like, finally going to bed. Also, too many of dem Fries, and you'll shatter the plinth. Bear shan't be pleased. ;)

But please, retun to topic as soon as I'm gone. Pretty birds, Asaryu!! Europe's birds are mostly rather utilitarian drab.

I think you can feed them seeds (like sunflower seeds) er... quinua, I can't remember the name in english (it's 4am!) and fruits. I'd go for the fruits, perhaps apples and you could add a tiny bit of honey. I don't know the exact diet, but I'm sure it's somewhere out there in the internet :)

Glad to find someone who shares a love for animals like me :D

Thanks, I will look it up one day, but for now, I think our neighbours keep them fat enough :)

When I was growing up we had 3 rabbits, 9 guinea-pigs, 2 dogs (german Shepherd x something and border collie x kelpie), 2 cats (named Fred and Ginger), 2 mice and about 15 canaries. We were a pet-friendly household.

I thought this was meant to be a pets thread rather then a random funny animal thread?
