They See Me Rollin' - The Car Thread

Post by Don Alexander »

Following the wish of a certain car-fanatic forumite, here is a thread all about cars!!

Tell us about your car, talk about the newest sports car designs, or whatever...

To open the thread, I reported a few months ago I had gotten a new car.

It's a Volkswagen Passat of the B6 series, from late 2007, Diesel, with the strongest available motor in this series, 2.0 liters TDI with 125 kW / 170 HP. It's black, and it's the most awesome thing I've ever driven. :D

Last Saturday night, coming back from this metal festival we had attended, me and my friend had just left the Autobahn and were coming upon a feeder road into the city where my friend lives. I'm normally bent on saving fuel and thus accelerate very slowly. I looked, saw the only approaching car was far away, turned the corner, took some seconds to get up to about 20 km/h (second gear) - and suddenly noticed this car - a taxi - was approaching fast!!! :-o

So I put the pedal to the metal - talk about Need for Speed!!! I've never felt anything like it!! The car leaped forward like a cheetah, I drove each gear up beyond 5000 min^-1, and before we knew it, we had hit almost 100 km/h! Seriously, it could not have taken more than 4 seconds or so. I'm not wont to repeat it again, but I'm glad to know I can lay rubber and make my enemies taste my dust. :P

My dad's the official car guy in the family, though most men on his side of the family have a love for automobiles. My grandpa has a beautiful, restored 50's model... Chevy. I, sadly, cannot remember the name of the model.

Dad's making a '68 Chevy Malibu into a dragster.

That was a good percentage of my childhood, up at the speedway cheering for my dad.

The Colorado pick up I'm using right now is causing problems :-L I only just got it a few months ago, too.

I'm from a family of car lovers. My grandpa has a classic Rolls in this garage in pristine condition, each year he changes up his Cadillac for the newer model. One of my uncle's is all about his Mercurys and Lincolns, the other is in love with anything Rover or Jeep. My dad and I lean toward pick up trucks and classic muscle cars, however the cars I've owned have almost always been Nissans because they're safe, affordable and dependable. Just traded in my car for a new Nissan Rogue and it handles like a truck with a v6 but is in fact a small crossover with a large 2.5L 4 cylinder engine.

We have a burnt out 65 Chevy Impala in the garage. That used to be such a beautiful car.

And my grandfather has a restored 90-95% original parts 1934 Knucklehead Harley Davidson. Or 1938. Can never remember which.

I can't find parts for my grandfather's '73 Nova (And can't afford the few parts that I DO manage to find), where the hell do you find parts for a '30s Harley?!?!

For Chevy parts try Year One, Adamas. Depending on what you need they probably have it, affording it may be a different horse. For possibly cheaper parts keep your eye open for swap meets in your area. You can generally get good deals at one of those, even on NOS parts.

I'd take that nova and that impala in a heartbeat. Both beautiful cars.

I use to have a Ford Escort. It was such a lovely rotten car. The bumper was badly damaged, there were problems with the thing, but it was mine....and then the transmission fell through the casing. Got it fixed...then the engine pretty much fused solid one day.

We have my late uncle's Chevy Camaro (I think) T-Top. The exterior body is nice looking. A few scratches and dents here and there but it's nothing all that noticeable. It's not until you open the doors and pop the hood that you see just how sorry of a state it's in. Almost everything is torn out of the dash, there's one seat, the carpet's been removed poorly and that's just the interior. Dad acts like fixing the engine is as much of a challenge as fixing up the interior.

Lynn had a good eye for cars, but I still can't think of any reason why he'd have this car and in this state. Dad bought it from Lynn's widow when this law came around where cars parked in yards that aren't in running condition were to be towed and totaled. The T-Top and a Chevy pick up were two memories of him that Jeanette and my cousins didn't want to let go of. One of my cousins has the pick up now. I don't know if the T-Top will ever be fixed.

I'd take it if Jeanette or my cousins didn't want it back. Junker that it is right now, it's still part of Lynn. And it'd make a nice car.

Heh... this seems an appropriate spot to share a little fun story of my father. You see, one time we were visiting Scotland for my cousin's wedding, and we rented ourselves a car, only the one car we could have for the five of us (plus luggage) was an Alfa, and a sporty one at that. But that's not the point. The funny thing was, when we were driving on the Motorway outside Glasgow, somehow a Smartcar overtook us. Much laughter was had.

Now, though, I occasionally drive a 2001 model Hyundai Accent. A really lovely car when it works as it should. Most of the time I go about on my bicycle, which cost considerably much more, and is so worth it.

Looks like my mom sold the Impala a few weeks ago. Considering the thing hasn't been started in about 8 years, I think she got an alright price. She sold it to a mechanic at the car dealership she works with who was looking for a winter project, and he's already gotten it started.

Sounds like the Impala will be in good hands :)
