Re: D&D anyone? (:
I was playing a D20 game of Warhammer 40K. Some guys I knew bought the license to develop the RPG, but I have no idea if they ever followed through with it. But we tested it at a 3-day convention. I played four connected sessions, or a four-session plot, whatever. My character was a marine called Max Damage. Max Damage was uber-fanatically loyal to the Emperor. The Emperor wanted Max to charge in and kill the enemy, then that's what Max Damage would do. Death held no fear for Max Damage; his only fear was failing to do the Emperor's bidding. So I charged into everything, never bothering to seek cover or defence through the entire day of gaming, and due entirely to lucky rolls the character barely suffered a scratch all day.
Then we got to the end. We had to place a nuke in the middle of a bad guy base, start the timer, and get out. So we do most of that, then it's time to leave, and Max Damage volunteers to stay with the nuke to make sure it goes off, and isn't stopped by the bad guys. Everyone else leaves. Max Damage waits, the bad guys come, a firefight ensues. Max remains unharmed, again due to awesome rolls from me and crap rolls from the GM.
Then the nuke goes off.
I roll a 20. Max Damage takes half damage.

It was 20,000 points or something. Like a gazillion times as much as was needed to kill the character. But still awesome that I rolled a 20.Don Alexander wrote:Max Damage!!!

Re: D&D anyone? (:
Hmmm well I've played D&D since 1st Edition... and a lot since 2nd Edition and on... along with a lot of other games also.
One of the best moments was when my ex-wife's little elven bladesinger decided she was going to cast a fireball at an approaching set of monsters. We were outside Myth Drannor (Forgotten Realms) and even if she maxed out the size, it was *just* short of hitting our party.
DM: "Ok, you realize you're in a wild magic area, you still want to try?"
Ex: "Yup, even if it maxes out, if it even works, we'll be safe"
Group: *nods in agreement*
Ex rolls for wild magic surges.... and rolls... 00
I about lost it and her comment was "aw shit..." and the DM just started picking up d6's and rolling =)
Ya see... 00 roll on a wild magic surge is DOUBLE damage and DOUBLE the size.... so while we were just outside normal range of the fireball, we were not however out of range of a double damage, double size fireball...
My cleric was the only one who survived the blast.... of the party and critters lol... I nursed my wounds and proceeded to find ashes to resurrect hehe =)

Haha, I must admit, that's happened to me quite a lot, Thaldin.
I hate it when I ready my action and some other party member suddenly charges or changes his mind and then... BOOM!
And then they blame me for conspiring against them, lol.

Re: D&D anyone? (:
The infamous Parrots and Monkeys story.
This involved my character in a TFT campaign - Dabo walks in dreams.
I had recently joined the campaign, and was unfamiliar with how magic worked specifically. I'd never before played an Magic User type of character, so... live and learn. Dabo's a pygmie witch-doctor
Dabo and the rest of the group were in an outpost in the jungles (I believe that this was when we were part of the Ketchen Foreign Legion). Dabo had wandered outside the wall at night..when all of a sudden, he's confronted with a large, Grey creature with a rather long sharp horn on his nose. This wasn't a unicorn, but looked rather tough...especially to a Halfling.
Dabo had to do something before getting trampled by what amounted to something quite a bit nastier looking than him.
I quickly scanned my spell list and found at the bottom a spell that I'd never used before but looked promising.
Looking at the GM, I declare "Dabo casts...a megahex sleep".
I got the 'Are you sure?" from the GM. *Classic*
"Of course, I am"
"Okay"
I toss in 6d6 dice into the spell...boom, goes off like a charm, the creature drops like a ton of flabby bricks. Woo hoo!
(It's important to understand at this point that multihex doesn't mean that it's a powerful hex but that the spell covers multiple game hexes. - I didn't know this)
Something falls onto Dabo's shoulder...Dabo looks down and sees a dead parrot. Another parrot lands with a thump a few feet away, followed by a monkey of some type, and another, and another (yes, you guessed it - I just put several game hexes of animals to sleep - most of which live in trees, with which Dabo is surrounded).
Running wildly back into the fort, his hands above his head to try and protect himself, Dabo screams "Help,. help...Parrots and Monkeys!!"

I always found the most fun part of gaming was doing silly stuff like that.MrBishop wrote: Running wildly back into the fort, his hands above his head to try and protect himself, Dabo screams "Help,. help...Parrots and Monkeys!!"

Re: D&D anyone? (:
I am actually getting ready to start a 4th Edition campaign next weekend I believe.
My 14 yr old son, my friend and his wife, and my g/f are going to be playing. Now I am not really keen on how they trashed the Forgotten Realms setting, but I figured we'd give it a go and see what happens. Plus I think this edition really will be more fun for the new players. And since I'll be running it...
I can tweak it =D

They had Cyric, with Shar's help, sneak into Mystra's plane and assassinate her.
Since it was on her plane, she was literally destroyed which unweaved magic everywhere. It caused a "spellplague" which totally wiped out tons of stuff including a lot of the major players in the Realms. The merging of the two worlds (see below) also got rid of some old lands and brought in some new ones.
Basically, they needed to get the new magic system in and this was their way of doing it. They killed off some gods, demoted some others, slightly merged Toril and Abier back together and trashed a lot of the old heros of the Realm since they were closely linked with Mystra...

Another problem with the Forgotten Realms as they were was that it was too mapped out - there weren't that many places that were really "Forgotten" anymore. Certainly, this is bound to happen when you have a game world that's been around at least 20 years. I think their choice was to either nix EVERYTHING that had ever happened in the world (which is a problem with their cross-merchandizing with the books)... or, they could manufacture a calamitous event that radicically brought about all the changes they wanted with keeping the established backstory.
But for my part, I'm an Eberron player through and through. It's like Casablanca meets the pulp fantasy adventure books I'm so fond of.
