They've got a weird mix. I think the author picked characters and designs of what ever era that he/she happened to like. For example, having 80s punk Storm, but put pants on everyone who (during the same era) would have had speedoes, like Colossus or Beast. I can dig that, though I have no idea what's up with Gladiator's mohawk. It's like he had a midlife crisis after getting his ass handed to him by freakin' Cannonball* and did something weird with his hair.

(*I haven't followed Marvel comics in over a decade, but I remember that shameful incident, since Gladiator is Marvel's Superman expy who regularly dices with cosmic beings and once punched a planet to death to blow off some steam... yet lost to freakin' Cannonball.)

That's Gladiator's Kid aparently. And I always liked Jubilee's raver outfit.

Well, with Gladiator, while I was introduced to him by my 'Dark Phoenix Saga' TPB, I will always remember him for this one pair of pages later on:

Then again, my favorite moment in that comic was:

Oh, and yes, Kirk tried to hit on Jean in that book. Was there any doubt? :))

I've always suspected that the 'Dr McCoy?' 'What?' exchange was the entire reason for the X-Men/Star Trek crossover.
I swear I will, I'll make you smile.

The novels were fun as well. The X-Men on TNG's Enterprise was really funny at the end when Picard went into the holodeck and met the Xavier program Beast created, then both remarked on the uncanny resemblance. (I got the book about a month before Sir Patrick Stewart was confirmed as Xavier in the first movie) =))
