And incidentally, having had it commented that my mother has beautiful daughters (my mother has only one daughter), I can kind of empathize, but I also know that most of those errors occur due to bad eyesight.

I'm hesitant to say it's out of character, since we know so little about her so far, so I assume this is just another step in her development. I'm not sure I'd get so uptight about a throw-away comment from a cranky old lady....
