And this is why people in MA3 don't talk to each other. It just makes things worse.

Ah, three panels of quite sweet stuff, with Gary showing his (rather abrupt and huge, but there we go) character development, and some quite good jokes about the relationship between Yuki and Matt... And then, the mandatory last-panel punchline, which has to be built on a display of vast and pointless stupidity that drains all the life out of the strip.

Really, sometimes, I think the readership would forgive the writers if they sacrificed comedy for narrative. It's not like the first three panels were too serious, after all.

Anyhow, it seems like the final configuration may pair Yuki off with Matt. I'm not sure how plausible I'd find this, but it's not grossly silly, and I guess it's one way of handling the rather hurried wrap-up for the comic.

I know Yuki is not that stupid.

YES Gary. Try again, and again, until they actually listen to the words coming out of your mouth, instead of jumping to the wrong conclusion before you’re done talking.

You’ve got this.

Please dear God in Heaven NO. Please don't pair the girl with all the issues around not being able to trust men with the biggest pig in the entire comic. The guy whose ONLY reliable trait aside from being kinda good for advice in weird situation is that he HABITUALLY CHEATS ON HIS PARTNERS X( . Yuki may as well go back to Sonya, as not only do they enjoy rough sex, but they'd be committed to each other as well.

Gary also needs to not sell himself short here either, he talks about being with the guy who's cool with risk... Without remembering that he WAS the guy that was cool enough with the risk that came with trying to be with Yuki in the first place. He was the one willing to take it slow and go carefully instead of just hopping into bed at the first opportunity like so many other dudes in the comic were demonstrated as doing and scaring the shit out of Yuki. He was the whole reason Yuki even saw what was going wrong in her life and inspired her to change for the better rather than living as a crazy cardboard stereotypical angry 'lesbian'.

Gary should also consider LISTENING himself. Yuki's finally telling Gary exactly what she wants, which is HIM, in a relationship where they can both be mutually loving and caring for each other.

Gary should listen to Yuki? How about Yuki listening to Gary?

Honestly...how did both Yuki and Matt confuse Gary's 'Yuki, maybe you should be with Matt' observation with 'sorry, Yuki - I love Matt'? Also, got to love how both Yuki and Matt don't seem to understand that Gary is not willing to risk being subjected to bodily harm just because 'they' both find the risk playful/fun.

Gary may have initially wanted to be with Yuki; but after every sexual encounter he's had with her where he ended up getting hurt - and with his character development where he no longer allows himself to be talked into doing things he doesn't want to be included in - Gary has no obligation to bend to Yuki's (or Matt's) will now that Yuki thinks she's ready to take on sex with two male partners; especially when the chances of her hurting either one of them is still very high - which is only an arousing thought for two of them.

And Gary makes a very valid point - Yuki should be changing herself for herself; not anyone else. The fact she says she's doing it because she wants Gary doesn't mean he should give in to her wants; especially if he no longer has those kind of feelings for her I mean, which is worse? Being honest with someone that you're just not that into them anymore (which is what Gary is doing here), or leading them on and making them think you still love them because you don't want to risk hurting their feelings (which is what the old Gary would have done)?

Unfortunately, not enough, which is one of the many reasons why I left three years ago and moved to Ottawa.

I think Gary is listening to himself, even if he hasn't directly told *us* (the reader). It is plainly obvious: he is not interested in Yuki anymore, romanticly. Dissect his comments. He doesn't want risk. He came by not for impromptu sex, but just to give Yuki the artwork. He was still startled at seeing Yuki pegging Matt, despite him seeing/being with Matt on enough occasions. I think Gary has woken up and realized his streak of casual sex and failures at trying to find a permanent partner/lover have left him empty. I don't know if he's actually made the leap to realize he should now pursue Zii, despite their warm conversation at breakfast.

I also think he is marginally pissed at Matt. Matt's therapy, however unconventional, has helped Yuki. If we remember, Matt has had to disguise his junk in order for his penis to not prematurely send Yuki off in a rage. Chocolate sauce... elephants... other kinky stuff I am sure. But Gary is still upset that Matt is justifying and rationalizing his therapy as a way to get his own rocks off, then thick enough to think that Gary wants to have Matt sexually (last panel). Stereotypically, Matt thinks with his dick. Gary has gone to Matt for advice before, usually out of desperation. And while the advice has been good, it invariably involves more kink than Gary wants (introducing Snna to him, the failed foursome, etc.). Great advice, but at what cost?

Part of the reason why I would have prefered Gary to confront Matt alone and Yuki alone, not together... too much crazy & ego together that they muddy the conversation. I don't even know if Yuki comprehends Gary's last statement to her.

Or to put it another way — Why not pair the physically violent dangerous frikkin’ psychotic maniac with the one person in the comic daft enough to get his rocks off at that degree of risk? And if you hate Matt soooo bad, you can comfort yourself with the knowledge that he may get his genitals ripped off any time a sex session goes bad. Which is potentially 40% of the time.

As for the fidelity — meh. I suspect that Yuki’s lesbian twinges may lead her astray sometimes too. They’ll likely have to settle for an open relationship. But Matt may even settle down a bit once he can replace “risk of getting caught” with “risk of getting maimed”.
Gary also needs to not sell himself short here either, he talks about being with the guy who's cool with risk... Nah. Gary was prepared to go for Yuki because he was desperate. Which is a notoriously bloody awful basis on which to make long-term life choices. He really needed to be talked out of that. His only other excuse was that he had narrow, excessively geeky criteria; he thought that Yuki being into manga and being related to his idol made her perfect for him. But now he knows that he can get on just fine with all sorts of women, and anyhow, Yuki is hardly the only geek girl in Montreal.

It was always possible that the two of them could transmute their original bad decisions into a working relationship. They did have some chemistry, and I thought it might happen. But if not, that’s great. People grow.

I'm not insisting that Gary be with Yuki as a power play on her end and quite frankly, I have NO idea where people get the idea that Yuki is trying to FORCE Gary to do anything. If anything, the dynamic has reversed to where Yuki is doing everything she can to make things as good for Gary as possible, except it's just at the completely wrong time, as he appears to have totally dismissed her as an option and is now just looking to cut ties so the comic can wrap itself up with what was arguably the classic option of 'Zii was the first girl I laid eyes on, so she wins'. If as worldshaking implies, we've just had the typical 'love realization' everything else should be speeding along to its conclusion, at least for Gary's story. Actually, when is the comic supposed to be concluded again? We still have to break Zii and Didi up, resolve the wrestling fiasco, determine what's going to happen to Peggy, resolve the issue with the band and have everyone paired off for the most part. That's going to take at least 4-5 months if the creators don't dilly dally.

All I'm going to say is: It is seriously nice to see Gary stick by his backbone and try to actually communicate, and I sincerely hope Yuki will get some kind of professional help from someone with zero interest of turning her into a sexual plaything.

By that same token, talking about going with the path of least resistance, the only reason Matt's even involved in this fiasco (beyond 'comedy') is that Sonya literally had to fuck him into exhaustion so he couldn't run away from Yuki. That seems like an equally terrible basis for them to shack up. Yuki made it plain that she just wanted help to be with the guy she really loved and now the comic is just saying that she should settle for a sex freak because that's all a crazy like her can really hope for, just someone who can tolerate her. Not love, TOLERATE, which is just a form of settling, which as Spidrift said, one should NEVER do

Gary: you go, boy! I think the writers are doing a nice, if expedited, job of showing that Gary can still be Gary and the strip can still be funny with Gary having a sense of agency and assertiveness.

I agree that the best thing about Matt and Yuki as a couple is that no one else has to be in a relationship with either of them and suffer the sudden but inevitable betrayal or violence incident to dating one of them. Still, both are growing and trying to improve themselves and it doesn’t bother me at all that Yuki’s next lesson might be “you can’t always have what you want.”
