Oh, I meant I forgot about his allegedly-gargantuan porn collection.
I wouldn't color him a creep because of his porn collection. He wasn't doing g anything lascivious (okay by definition he is). Besides, it was mostly of Amber Amber and he gave all of it to her we he saw her as a real person and not a masturbatory aid, so it's probably not that big anymore if there's anything left.
Well, if his collection was
that huge, subtracting the box he gave to Amber might still leave a lot.
But no, Gary’s porn collection was never there to show him as a high-grade creep. He was a
pathetic shut-in who couldn’t relate to people, including women, at all well, so that was his only sexual outlet — and being a geek (and a comedy geek at that), he naturally took the collecting impulse to excess. But having some porn around isn’t terribly unusual for a man, I’m afraid, and Gary seems to have retained a healthy understanding of the difference between fantasy and reality — especially after he met Amber in the flesh.
And this strip appears to show Gary
joking, even slightly at his own expense, while referring back to that long-ago conversation. Quite likeably un-creepy, really.
It's funny that he actually bought physical media. He was really dedicated to her and Chanelle Fine.
This may be a slight case of technology marching on. Once upon a time, physical media was the only option — and even eight years or so ago, when Gary’s habits were being defined in this comic, the idea that you could reasonably store everything digitally was still fairly new. And this comic always does show the writers’ ages a little bit, in things like the characters’ musical tastes.
Plus, Gary. Total geek. Obsessive collector.
