If by feminism you mean "the social, economic and political equality of ALL genders." then yes, I am a straight male feminist sympathizer, and most of my female friends are sincere and sane feminists.
And this is a great example of what frustrates me about G&D's portrayal of queer characters. The Ma3verse (along with the ECverse) is a fantasy setting in which everyone is magically okay with queerness, which in and of itself is fine. But into this setting, G&D place queer characters with hangups that come from the real-world problem that there are a lot of people who are not okay with queerness and who wield enough influence in our lives to interfere with our coming out. We don't sit in the closet because it's fun or comfortable; we do it because it's our best shot at survival, because for whatever reason we can't afford to lose the family/friends/employers/what-have-you who aren't okay with who we really are. And being closeted sucks; it makes you paranoid, it makes you hate yourself, and it eats away at your capacity to empathize with others. And while these are problems we definitely need to address, especially so we don't hurt other people, we're not going to be able to make much progress when the people around us pretend that these issues materialized out of thin air rather than being a response to an actual threat, especially when they do so to avoid confronting the possibility that they themselves have contributed to said threat, consciously or otherwise. So when I see "not-a-lesbian Sonya" or "on-the-down-low Nathan" or "fauxminist James" in a setting that implies that their hangups and shame are completely unfounded and delusional, and then I see it played for laughs and for character indictment, I find it pretty invalidating.I think the gay/bi part is just G&D adding more humor to the situation.
That's the problem, i used to tell people "I believe in the feminist cause" and some of the answers were "Oh so you think women are smarter than men?" or "so you agree with those crazy women that want to eliminate all males from the face of the earth?", and i even got women saying to me "so you like women with armpit hair and no lipstick?", i grew up with what my mother (an active member of the movement back in the 70s and 80s) thaught me, which is "the social, economic and political equality of all genders."KittyHat wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2017 6:04 pmThis.
I used to describe myself as a "feminist," but now, if you ask me whether I'm a feminist, I'm going to have to ask you what you mean by "feminist." Because my answer could be anywhere from "yes, of course" to "OMFG not just no but HELL NO" depending on the version of "feminism" in question.
It simply is not a useful or meaningful word any longer because it's become too broad. That's not to say that no writings described as "feminist" have meaning any more, mind you -- just that the term itself encompasses too many different and often directly conflicting ideologies to be of any real use any longer.
And the winner is... umm... I guess Error of Logic comes first as most accurate!Fairy Glade's Fairy wrote: ↑Tue Oct 24, 2017 7:55 pmError of Logic predicted: James & Tracy break up, then James starts romancing Gary as he claims Gary turned him gay
Vitocap predicted: same as Error of Logic, but James & Tracy will claim the breakup it's all Gary's fault and hate Gary forever
Fluffy predicted: also breakup, as Gary gives Tracy a sgr that blows her mind and then Tracy dumps James for Gary
Is there a prize? ;) Trophies are nice, but cash is better.Fairy Glade's Fairy wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2017 7:07 pmOK time to recheck who predicted right and who was off..... Error of Logic, Vitocap and Fluffy still were running for first place!

I mean, all 3 predicted breakup (rightly), but Fluffy predicted it to happen at the end of a successful 3some with swirlies (that was wrong) and Vitocap predicted James & Tracy would afterwards "hate Gary forever" (talk about wrong, lol) while EoL predicted breakup plus James goes gay for Gary, all of which was 100% correct! of course Tracy too wants Gary now, which Fluffy was the only one who predicted, but still EoL was the only one who even tho not complete in his predicting at least didn't make mistakes... so congrats to him!
Right now I'd take a few strips with her back story than have to deal with more of James and Tracy's rocky relationship.Spidrift wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2017 12:11 pmHmm, that fetching wavy-haired receptionist needs a name. Definitely one of those Giz-drawn girls who wear glasses at whom men could see themselves making passes.
I know. Just being a bit facetious about fanservice, but also trying to start with a lighter note to ease into harsher words.Spidrift wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2017 12:11 pmThis comic genuinely isn't porn. Well, it certainly isn't just porn. It shows sex when it's relevant to the plot - which is a lot of the time, but not every time. Showing Gary doing stuff with Peggy would have been superfluousOllieOrOlly wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2017 11:00 amWe've seen enough of Peggy goodness to be okay with missing out on some more. Though, truthfully, tad disappointed, but quite relieved it didn't cut to that horrid DiZi duo.
Belated thanks for the (possibly joking) kudos for my own earlier prediction. Heh heh.Fairy Glade's Fairy wrote: ↑Sat Nov 04, 2017 7:07 pmOK time to recheck who predicted right and who was off.....
With only ~135 strips remaining before the comic ends why are they still focusing on the James and Tracy train wreck in the first place? Kiley has been out of the comic for a while now (since March I think) so what happened to her? Is she back with Matt? Or has she been put on a bus?
