I'm in the lucky squad, because i think all the good things that have happened to him (since this comic started) outweigh the bad ones, because of that, i still go with my hypothesis: He doesn't change because the environment pushes him not to. (actually, i'm starting to think the environment is pushing him to double down on being who he is)...

He's poorly treated in that he's not actually treated like an actual character with agency, emotions and genuine thoughts and feelings or real desires, which got phased out over time and exists as the weakest kind of plot device/archetype. It's grating because there WERE moments in the earlier years where it seemed like Gary's niceness was actually something genuine and not just a trait he has through passivity and that maybe his key to finding love lay in his ability to be open and accommodating to others, regardless of their shortcomings. But that's all been nerfed in favor of just jerking him around like a puppet.

He's lucky the creators have some sense of obligation to him enough to grant him extremely unlikely sexual victories, but even those can end up being a bane in disguise, as he's really just capable of one really awesome party trick and nothing else.

Oh, I fully agree with that; Gary’s failure to change is entirely logical in its way, because when he’s got the things that he’s wanted, it’s been by being himself, not by trying to change. Not terribly satisfying for anyone who’s looking for character development, and makes it hard to see how his story can come to some kind of conclusion, but consistent enough.

I’m not sure how he could double down on it, though, short of dosing up on horse tranquilisers and hanging a “Kick Me” sign around his neck.

There used to be strips where she did have nipples, but she retracted them when one of the other characters told her that moral guardians had complained, iirc. After that, she mostly wore shirts.
