I figured Gary's smiling was most likely to be the result of him realizing that while her motives might have been questionable, he still got to shag Didi for several hours.
It could also be him realizing that he's finally CAPABLE of angry, and he's happy that he can actually express that anger. But I'm not sure Gary realizes how much being a doormat is holding him back.
That is an unnerving smile, I will admit. I'm not sure if it was intended to be so, but it's kind of creepy.
