Read the label. The song is actually credited to Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen. Smith recorded it first (on Easter); Springsteen did it live a few times, and a studio version finally showed up on The Promise. 10,000 Maniacs covered it fifteen years after the initial release.

(Oh well. At least this caused me to do some digging around, which means that I've now turned up the Garbage/Screaming Females cover version...)

I was unaware the 10,000 Maniacs version was a cover. I'll have to dig up the original by Smith and Springsteen.Spidrift wrote:Read the label. As I recall, the 10,000 Maniacs version is fairly close to Patti Smith's; Springsteen's is a bit more lo-fi and rough-edged. (Apparently, his original version of the song was quite different; Smith rewrote it when he handed it off to her, and he now plays her version.) The Garbage/Screaming Females version is sung as a duet and ends with a hell of a guitar solo.
But we digress.

Just a brief note: I am really feeling much more interested in Ma3 and what happens in it, since about the beginning of June.
