Yuki certainly said so the first time she got a glimpse.

But am I the only person to think that "helpless woman being brutally murdered" doesn't quite work as a comedy theme?

Maybe not, but once again we have a movie reference the same week as my film history classes analysis of said movie. This is getting eerie.

I think the odds of it not being some fan's film class analyzing this particular move were quite low.

Didi isn't a natural blonde. And her beaver tattoo that was on her beaver is gone...

And when sultry Dusk disrobes they'll learn
She is not a natural blonde
For the lower She goes the darker it grows
An Eve that blows on Her knees for Satan

Censorship sucks, but you need to do what you need to do.

Nice pic. Although I do sense a classic movie character/montage theme creeping in. North by Northwest crop duster scene in our future? Kinda surprised we haven't gotten a Wizard of Oz one yet, actually.

Giz specifically says in the blog notes that this is a commission, so you can probably blame whoever requested it for the theme. (And personally, I think that in this case, the request is a sleazy, misogynistic bit of crap.) On past form, a lot of people commissioning sketches ask for "your character X in that famous situation or costume from geek-favourite property Y". It's kind of funny-sometimes, but does get overplayed.

Movies have been big business for a hundred years plus now, mass-market comic strips a bit longer, TV for sixty-plus years, video games for thirty; that's plenty of famous scenes and costumes for commission sketches, bonus postcards, and in-story kinky sexual scenarios. Oz is probably unavoidable (even a Brit like John Allison has gone there), along with the Jabba/Slave Leia scene, and I guess we'll get Gary as the Doctor one day; I'm kind of amazed we haven't seen DiDi as Lara Croft yet; and I guess we could always have the Troublemakers as the Ghostbusters...

And now I want to see the last scene of the comic being Sonya ordering Zii to get onto the plane which is about to take Gary away to Paris, because their relationship doesn't matter a hill of beans in this crazy world, and then going off with Yuki and saying that this may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

True. But, I would hope she gets to choose the basic nature of the commissions she accepts. If so, then I would assume she'd do things she was either a> comfortable & knowledgeable handling; and/or b> interested in (or interested in challenging herself with). With the Charlie Chaplin and Mousketeers nods a few strips back, just noticing some classics getting represented. As opposed to the recent pop culture references we've enjoyed. That's all.

And that would be an acceptable ending.

Acceptable? With Gary and Zii able to say that they'd always have Paris, and the play-out music being self-selecting... The fundamental things apply, you know.

As to the commissions - I don't know what goes through Giz's mind, though I'm sure that she'd reject some things, but it's not like artists want to get into the habit of rejecting paying work, so I can't blame her if she does some stuff that isn't really 100% compatible with her own view of the comic.
