Doesn't make much sense to me. Sonya has an epiphany that she's in love with Zii, she goes after Zii, Zii talks her out of it, she falls in love with someone else - and all of this offscreen?

IF THAT HAPPENED (that Sonya is in love with someone else, and not with either just Zii, or with both Zii and Gary) than it will be in book 4 when it is published

BTW, I don't think she has seen Zii since the time that Kiley made her blurt out that she was in love with Zii, so Zii has not said "sorry Sonya, but my answer is no" yet

Yes, I remember it just fine, thanks. However, i'm not 100% certain from wording and timings whether Sonya's current state and statements follow directly on from that, or whether other stuff has been happening in the meanwhile.

Does NO ONE remember to read a thread before posting to it? Because I've been over this once already.

Anyway, we'll just have to wait and see.

I believe Gary heard "I'm in love with Lilzee." At least that's what will come up later in conversation. When he stops to think about it, it will become clear, but Kiley didn't give him that chance.

*Shrug* Two weeks of off-screen time, in which stuff also happened between Gary and Yuki's father, there were possibly therapy sessions between Yuki and Kiley, and Erik and Zii presumably spent a lot of time arguing over Erik's bright idea.

Previous off-screen events have included Dillon and Matt's bust-up after Dillon caught Matt with Sandra, any and all the tutoring in basic social skills that Zii gave Gary, and (so far) whatever has happened with Sandra and Senna. Nor do we know much about Dillon's acting career of late. The month of double dates was compressed into one strip of visual gags.

Fact is, some shit does go down off-stage in this comic, doubtless mostly where Dave and Giz can't think how to make stuff funny, or when they want to move a stodgy plot along a bit, but also for the sake of throwing us into small and interesting loops. This would be a more unexpected loop than some, but maybe they couldn't wring many laughs out of "Sonya pesters Zii, Zii avoids Sonya".

For that matter, Sonya was confused and bemused when we saw her last, and Kiley had given her a lot to think about - but that wouldn't guarantee that her first conclusion - "I'm in love with Zii" - actually stood up to prolonged examination. Also, it's been two weeks - quite a long time for nothing much to have happened, and for Zii not to have learned that she had a new problem.

But we just don't know yet. Maybe Sonya, being Sonya, really has taken two weeks to come to terms with her bisexuality and decide to embrace it. Maybe Zii, forewarned by Gary's account of what happened in the restaurant, has been carefully avoiding her up until now. We'll see.

(But probably not on Tuesday. I get the distinct impression of all sort of giant stone balls being set rolling and handles being turned on Mousetrap game constructions, to start volume 5 with industrial-strength chaos. Whatever the exact design of strip 600, I bet that someone will be begging someone for help.)

I don't know. Sonya has the epiphany that she's in love with Zii... and next time we see her, she isn't. Seems kind of pointless to me. The offscreen stuff you've listed usually didn't lead to major change.

Okay, so next strip, let's have Senna and Sandra back, who'll complicate things for Gary and DiDi respectively!

Considering how close we are to the end of this chapter or cycle, whoever Sonya is in love with, how they met and how it happened will probably be covered in the book version.

Also go to remember that Sonya is, well, an unquestionable bubblehead. It probably took her these three weeks to acknowledge/accept that she is bisexual and wants to pursue something serious with Zii.

If she mentions how Kiley helped her clue in on this fact, it just may be Zii barging in on Gary, demanding to know what Kiley said to Sonya to cause this new mess.

What if Sonya, not having any idea what Kiley's name is, simply says that "Gary's girlfriend" convinced her that she was in love with Zii?

So Zii'd get mad at Yuki?

Maybe - unless Sonya points out the 'girlfriend' was a petite blonde; then Zii would know who's responsible for screwing her over (albeit accidentally).

If Giz and Dave are keeping things simple, that is indeed the best explanation of why this shoe has taken two weeks to drop, yes.

Dalai Rasta wrote:What if Sonya, not having any idea what Kiley's name is, simply says that "Gary's girlfriend" convinced her that she was in love with Zii?

Wouldn't work for me. Sonya knows exactly who Yuki is, and knows her name. She also thinks that Gary is a player with a string of girls, so just saying "Gary's girlfriend" would automatically get the response "Which one?" She'd most likely say "Gary's skinny little blonde girlfriend" or something.

In fact, I think that there's a chance that she will identify Kiley to Zii as the person who set her on the path to renewed Zii-stalking, if Gary hasn't done so already by telling Zii the full story of That Saturday. Zii already thinks of Kiley as the person who (a) caused Gary to two-time poor Yuki, and (b) then heartlessly dumped poor Gary. Adding an extra, very personal reason for Zii to dislike Kiley would be the icing on the cake.

Which is all a shame from the characters' point of view, because Zii and Kiley really have a lot in common (smarts, slim figures, a tendency to meddle), and could learn a lot from each other (primarily confidence one way, analytical intelligence the other), and should get on rather well. But they're being set up for an explosion next time they meet. Which will probably lead to another of Kiley's Magrat moments (blowtorch away the nervousness and uncertainty and fuzzy thinking, and what's left is ice-cold dangerous).
