Pirvate Message Spam

Post by scsa20 »

So how many people have been getting private message spams from LadyROOT and/or LadyXAdmin? Here's an example of the message:

I've gone ahead and banned those people and their email address... and the ability to create an account with the name "admin" or "root" in it.

It's crazy how many spambots there are now...

I also knew something was suspicious about that LadyXAdmin person because they can't call themselves an admin if they aren't an admin. Good thing the didn't PM me because I probably would've been stupid and opened it. XP

And wait, is that why so many people who joined back in 2004 have been signing on lately? I thought that was a bit strange too.... (And yes, I check the section where it says who is online, but only if there is a name I don't recognize.)

I would recommend that users go into their "Profile" and set the following preferences to "no."

- Always notify me of replies
- Notify on new Private Message

You just really don't need these options turned to on for this forum and all they do is create outbound email that tends to bounce.

Oh, I did that already and I still get spams. I don't mind though, I'm not too lazy to delete them.

I only have email notification turned on for private messages for forums I know I won't visit all too often in case someone decided to private message me I know when I get it, that's how I found out about this spam and decided to forward it on and made sure the admins were notified about it.

So is there an easy way to report being contacted by one of these spambots?

Because I got a PM from one called 'MannInBlackk'.
"I am what comes out when the daytime becomes nighttime." He dramatically waved to the sky, which was a deep red from the sunset. "I emerge when the shadows lengthen and grow like weeds. It is this time that is the time of... twilight."

I got the same exact message from the same person, only that it was my name in there.

To help cut down on this influx some, I did do a major user purge at the start of last week to remove a number of inactive accounts and accounts that hadn't been used in a long time (i.e. the start of 2009).
