So I watched a little of Oreimo, and ended up checking out early on it. However the OP Irony by ClariS is fantastic!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1qEPPmNCJs yeah it's audiosurf, this song is jealously guarded. That said it's on Amazon... which I'm finding's happening more and more with Japanese artists I want.

Would you please stop acting nice to me like that because I'm not sure if or how to react...

English cover cause the lyrics are a real pain to find... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYn2TrSr1ho

That looks awfully similar to 'Phantom Quest Corp.' though, judging by the artwork, it's probably safe to say 'Ghost Sweeper Mikami' predates it.

I might check it out once I'm done with You're Under Arrest! :-?

It's not technically an OP, but Girls Dead Monster is some of my favorite anime music period. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zp410NNNvK8 (Little Braver) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNDikb3XzJY (Run With Wolves) that said Angel Beats in general had incredible music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNDikb3XzJY (OP, My Soul, Your Beats!)

Another anime that literally sold me JUST on it's musical strength from episode one forward was the recently completed Love Live! School Idol Project. Can't say enough good things about it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZG4SYdvbNE (OP) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mXTD-D-6sM (EP, Susume Tomorrow) and one bonus song from Muse that didn't make it into the anime, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMMG-h253N8 (Aishteru Banzai)

Edit! Two more

Moon Sphere is the OP for Otome Youkai Zakuro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TX0mQBafuo good song, totally doesn't match the tone of the anime which is shojou in disguise of seinen... helpless bishis every where! But the characters are good enough to stick around for the short run of 13 episodes.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoGpp43DaWA Guren no Yumiya (Crimson Bow and Arrow) is a fucking awesome name for a band. It also happens to be the OP for "Attack on Titan" and is by Linked Horizon. It's freaking bad ass.

Look up the anime Angel Beats, the intro and outro of that serie i consider to be one of the best since it really fits the theme and story of the serie, and the way they animated everything fits the music perfect!!

I could not agree more. The way that Linked Horizon combines several genres of music and separates them into parts but keeps them coherent so as not to distract from the overall experience is brilliant to say the least. I have become obsessed with that song as of late.

I may not care much for either series, but Armitage III and Iria: Zeiram both have bad*** OP's.

note: I would have linked directly to the OP for Iria, but the sound's so low you can barely hear it, so I linked to the OST instead.

'Eternal', the ED theme from 'Dragon Knight: Wheel of Time' (aka, 'Dragon Knight 4').

I loved everything about this series: the art, character designs, the narrative, and especially the music.

StrawberryCreme has done some fantastic fandubs (If your seen Kill La Kill Abridged you've heard one of them)

Here's her fandub of Sirius. The rest you can look through herself. :D

I've started watching 'Patapata Hikousen no Bouken' ("Secret of Cerulean Sand") and have found a new addition to my list of favorite ED's: "What Can I Do?"

No shit.

And the very first time I saw Cowboy BeBop on TV the opening theme knocked me off my feet, because I was completely unable to figure out if it was original or a standard jazz theme. Granted, I didn't know much of jazz back then, but I'm still flabbergasted of how Tank! sounds like an instant classic. I like Yoko Kanno's work in general (did you know that Ed was designed after her, by the way?) but the whole soundtrack of Cowboy Bebop (including the movie) is a supernova of awesomeness. I once read someone stating that music is one of the main characters of the series, which is an accurate way to put it IMHO. And it spectacularly broadened my musical horizons, making me more receptive to jazz and blues, and I know I'm not the only one for whom it played that role.

But since this thread is about opening and ending themes, let me dwell on Tank! a little more. While there are many opening and ending themes I like, there are only a few I care for completely independently of the anime and, for that matter, the opening and ending visuals. Tank! is one of the exceptions, but with the (completely atypical for anime) opening visuals? Total kill.

I'm not quite so fond of The Real Folk Blues, the ending theme for most of the episodes... err, sorry, I mean sessions, but I still like it a lot. It just doesn't particularly stand out in an already awesome soundtrack. And then there's the special endings. Space Lions, the ending theme of the two-parts session Jupiter Jazz in the middle of the series, is several kinds of brilliant. And then there's Blue, the ending theme of the final session of the series, for which I actually run short of superlatives, and that makes me cry almost every time I hear it, even out of context.

One final paragraph about Cowboy Bebop, this time about the movie: the opening theme of Cowboy Bebop: Knocking on Heaven's Door, titled Ask DNA is a killer too, all the more when associated with the visuals. As for the ending's Gotta Knock a Little Harder, it really is a jewel, and in my opinion Mai Yamane's voice shines in it more than in The Real Folk Blues.

I have other themes to mention, but I'm tired for now. I'll get to it later.

Not a closing theme, per se, but goes very well with the subject matter, I think: Obata Minako - The World of Midnight from Black Lagoon.

I started rewatching 'Girls Bravo' and rediscovered the 2nd ED. It's a catchy beat and so are the vocals. Plus, it seems as if Miharu's skipping in time with the beat, which is a nice touch.

I also like the ED for 'Metal Fighter Miku': "1,000 Karat Dreams".
