This is about a score of episodes late, but it just dawned on me to ask: Why did Dan leave his rifle behind? He had it when he burst in to save Jennifer and then it disappeared.

If the guards even saw them. If they had they would have been questioned, or just outright shot. And the rifle could have been concealed, at least somewhat, in that situation by standing it upright next to himself on the far side.
