Ash doesn't have a magical connection to the Artemis Academy. Tiffany does. Tiffany described Faith as having a strange relationship with the Academy's magic. Also of course Ash is Ranma and therefore awesome.

I know nothing of Ranma so referencing it means nothing to me.

Faith was attacking Tiffany with an attack on her mind, trying to force Tiffany to "love" her the way the others in her group do. She couldn't, and probably doesn't want to, use a physical attack against Tiff because Tiff is a schoolmate and she is Student Council President.

Ash is an enemy from another school. Her attack against him has been on a purely physical force level (generated by her ESPer abilities obviously). It's possible that her mind manipulation abilities are ineffective against Ash due to their past relationship. Regardless, a physical attack is a lot easier to dodge.
