I generally get an impression of who a person is based on how they write. Part of that is male/female but it's hard to tell just on how a person writes sometimes (although people rarely realize things they write that give them away). I have found that absent information one way or another, people tend to assume male, but then isn't there a rule about there not being any women on the internet?
