I think they're at the implementation phase. If Maria hadn't interrupted them, they would have gotten quite a bit of 'lab' time for themselves.

I'm sure lesbian experimentation, female "Puppy", and "I'll be in my lab" all tie together in a joke, but I'm not quite sure how...
