They probably are legally husband and wife, but they don't love each other. They just stay together for Melissa's sake.

Plus Dakota isn't always around anyway.

Legally? You mean Dakota actually bothered to get a male birth certificate?

I've assumed that their deception was only for the benefit of Melissa and her friends and teachers.

They probably are legally married... and birth certificate or no, I'd expect there are legal documents identifying Dakota as a man.

@Storm-forge mystique: Based on what? Dakota mind whammied Mel and her friends into beleving she was a guy, for years. And she did the same thing to Ace when he first met her. Who's to say she didn't do it to anyone else?

Also note in the first link, Dakota plainly said her last name isn't Hellrune, which prompted Jacqui to assume Dakota is "a bachelor". So she and Ana may not be married at all and may just be living together as Mel's "parents". And if anyone asked questions, one flash of that pendant, and Dakota could make them believe whatever she wanted.

That could just be interpreted as Ana deciding too keep her last name to those who don't know the truth. Cerisedoes remind Jaqui that Dakota is a "committed man".

Like how Lois Lane is still Lois Lane after she married Clark Kent.
