I can go along with that, 'cuz the same is true of Mel. Any time she's free of the wand's influence, she reverts to being the wicked witch.

I think it was more of the opposite. Looking back at Dakota before she found the wand she looks like a happy-go-lucky goody two shoes, but years of fighting extra dimensional threats and being bound to her mortal enemy has wore her down to the point that casual homicide doesn't bother her one bit. The wand probably protected her from straying to the dark side when she was Musical Starlight, but without it she's an adult woman with superior abilities and devoid of her childish innocence.

That's the part I was agreeing with, since Mel takes after Ana.
My point was, without the wand, she and Dakota are both prone to their vices.

Ever see 'Two and a Half Men'? Or, for 'Final Fantasy' fans, there's Cloud and Tifa. They're not married, but they live together and share responsibility looking after Denzel and Marleen, who consider Cloud and Tifa to be their parents. It could be the same with Ana, Dakota, and Mel.
@Cortez: It's never been said what others think of their arrangement. Even if others thought it, it still wouldn't mean it has to be true. All we know so far, is they live together and they're Mel's parents.

No one ever said they're married. In fact Dakota has beenseen correcting thw girls on her last name not being Hellrune. So they're open about not being married

Just off the top of my head:
Cloud and Tifa live together at her bar and they're raising two kids, but they're not married (though they are a couple).
'Full House' had three guys living together, who were just friends, helping to watch their friend's (Bob Sagat's character) kids.
'Sabrina, the Teenaged Witch' used a similar setup, where Sabrina lived with her mom and her aunt.
Point being, it's not unheard-of for two or more adults to live together, both platonically, or if they're romantically involved. But it doesn't have to mean they're hitched.
